soundtrack to director Baz Luhrmann's freakish musical Moulin Rouge has its way, we'll all be wearing corsets and swinging from the ceiling while the former Mrs Tom Cruise becomes our favourite new pop sensation. As daring as Luhrmann himself, the compositions test Kidman--who could have easily used a league of backup singers and studio knob-twiddlers to hide her inexperience--and she actually passes. She's no Olivia Newton-John, but she capably mixes Madonna's "Material Girl" with "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" (which is as breathy as Marilyn would've wanted it to be) and goes full throttle on any medley thrown her way. Her cover of "One Day I'll Fly Away" is especially poignant given her much-publicised personal tragedies. McGregor, though, is a real star; his giggly schoolboy brogue morphs into a fun cradle for Paul McCartney's Wings as well as U2's Bono on "Elephant Love Medley." Beck's cover of David Bowie's "Diamond Dogs" is a hit waiting to happen, while Pattie LaBelle's 1970s staple "Lady Marmalade" (remade by an all-star cast of divas, Lil' Kim and Christina Aguilera among them) already is. A delicious, racy soundtrack that is equal parts cabaret, glam rock and trip-hop, Moulin Rouge doesn't disappoint. --Kristy Martin

The year? 1900. The place? Montmartre. And we are? Watching from just opposite the Moulin Rouge and Baz Luhrman is about to dance us through the wild bohemian life of Paris at the turn of the century. Against this backdrop, the film follows the love affair between a handsome, 'oh-so-talented, charmingly bohemian, tragically impoverished' writer (Ewan McGregor) and the stunningly beautiful courtesan Satine (Nicole Kidman). This affair occurs while Satine has been signed away to the wealthy Duke along with the rights to the Moulin Rouge.
Like Luhrman's other two films, Strictly Ballroom and Romeo & Juliet, Moulin Rouge! is a film full to the brim with fun, overflowing with optical treats and bursting with auditory goodness. Luhrman takes us back to a time that was new, wild and exciting, a time that fell between two wars when the people of France were feeling liberated. The division between classes that once stood so strong was lapsing. Men of all walks of life frequented the Moulin Rouge and Luhrman has maintained this throughout the film.
With Moulin Rouge!, Luhrman has tried to create not a historically accurate artefact, but an emotionally or sensually accurate piece that gives clear nods to the real history. And that he does: this wild, exciting, extravagant film invites us to join Luhrman on a roller coaster through the extreme and sensational Bohemian World.
***Soundtrack*********** The soundtrack is varied and fun made up mainly of songs or medleys of songs from the past few decades. With songs varying from Marc Bolan's punchy and defiant The Children of The Revolution to the classic theme from The Sound of Music's to Lamb's beautifully subtle and sombre Gorecki the soundtrack reflects the action.
***Cast******************* As I have mentioned, McGregor and Kidman hold the lead roles in the film however they are supported a cast including Jim Broadbent who after a varied repertoire including films varying from Bridget Jones' Diary to iris to The Borrowers now brings energy and musicality to the character of Harold Zidler, owner of the Moulin Rouge. John Leguizamo, who you may remember chillingly playing Tibault in Luhrman's Romeo & Juliet, takes on the role of the infamous bohemian Toulouse Lautrec wonderfully. These are just two of the huge, strong and excellent cast who come together to exude the energy and passion Luhrman looked to produce.
***DVD********************* This being the Vanilla edition it is reasonably basic in terms of special features. It features two commentaries both of which are interesting and enjoyable to listen to. One is the regular audio commentary you get on most DVDs and is done by Luhrman, Catherine Martin (associate producer as well as costume and production designer) and Donald McAlpine (cinematographer). The second commentray entitled 'Behind The Red Curtain' is done with the writers, Baz Luhrman and Craig Pearce. this commentary elaborates on much of what you see on screen. Certain parts are interrupted by one of the 8 videos used to demonstrate certain elements for example how John Leguizamo was given short legs for the film.
I pass onto you my highest recommendations with this review however, my recommendation is for the film and not for this DVD version, buy the 2-disc Special Edition-you get hours of Special Features....

...but here we go… Moulin Rouge: I am a huge fan of musicals but the other half isn’t keen. The Moulin Rouge however keeps both of us happy. I was trying to find a succinct sentence that could some up the Moulin Rouge but it has almost as many facets as the diamonds the lead character sings about! For those of you who have never watched the Moulin Rouge it is a musical about the famous “dancehall” in Paris of the same name and directed by Baz Luhrmann. ... ...The theatrical setting of the Moulin Rouge lends itself perfectly to the somewhat zany plot. For me the casting is inspired. Nicole Kidman plays Satine and is both beautiful and charming in the role. The role really does fir her like glove and her over-acted moments, where Satine seems slightly demented, enhance the film beyond measure. She really is a dream to watch. Opposite her is Ewan Mcgregor who plays the naïve and love-sick Christian perfectly ...

Harold Zidler runs the Moulin Rough (Red Windmill) which is a dance hall and 1900s upper class brothel, where he and his 'diamond dogs' entertain all kinds of folk. however... The plot revolves around a courtesan (Satine) falling in love.. which throws up obvious complicaions... A further complication is that the duke (who owns the deeds to the moulin Rough) also 'loves' satine and won't allow Zidler to transform the Moulin Rough into a theater ... ...explained through the story of Moulin Rouge. moulin rouge is amazing! the whole film is so great at mixing old with new especially with the songs. the script is fantastic and the acting is great, allthough i doubt nicole kidman and ewan mcgregor can really sing as good as that. the actors are all well known and do a great job, and the costumes are amazing. it is definately a very girly film, and you can't watch it when you're drunk or you'll lose track. some of my friends have said it's a little ...

DVD Description
Cross LA BOHEME with CABARET, throw in a little bit of RENT, and you might almost begin to describe Baz Luhrmann's visually opulent, fast-paced, funny, heartrending MOULIN ROUGE. The film, which premiered as the opener to the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, is a musical set in 1899 Paris at the notorious Montmartre cabaret club, the Moulin Rouge. Directed by Baz Luhrmann (WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S ROMEO AND JULIET, STRICTLY BALLROOM), the movie stars Nicole Kidman as the high-kicking courtesan, Satine; Ewan McGregor as the sensitive poet, Christian; and John Leguizamo as the flamboyant artist and matchmaker, Toulouse-Lautrec. Luhrmann's use of eclectic lighting and saturated color, the fast zooms and quick cuts of his camera, and his magnificent costumes and sets perfectly capture the excess and freneticism for which the Moulin Rouge was famous. Beautifully led by McGregor and Kidman, the flawless supporting cast brings to life the culture of belle epoque Paris with magical realism. Above all, the anachronistic, energetic contemporary soundtrack is what drives MOULIN ROUGE, with popular songs by L'il Kim, Christina Aguilera, David Bowie, and Beck--as well as Kidman and McGregor adding their own superb vocals.
