soundtrack to director Baz Luhrmann's freakish musicalMoulin Rougehas its way, we'll all be wearing corsets and swinging from the ceiling while the former Mrs Tom Cruise becomes our favourite new pop sensation. As daring as Luhrmann himself, the compositions test Kidman--who could have easily used a league of backup singers and studio knob-twiddlers to hide her inexperience--and she actually passes. She's no Olivia Newton-John, but she capably mixes Madonna's "Material Girl" with "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" (which is as breathy as Marilyn would've wanted it to be) and goes full throttle on any medley thrown her way. Her cover of "One Day I'll Fly Away" is especially poignant given her much-publicised personal tragedies. McGregor, though, is a real star; his giggly schoolboy brogue morphs into a fun cradle for Paul McCartney's Wings as well as U2's Bono on "Elephant Love Medley." Beck's cover of David Bowie's "Diamond Dogs" is a hit waiting to happen, while Pattie LaBelle's 1970s staple "Lady Marmalade" (remade by an all-star cast of divas, Lil' Kim and Christina Aguilera among them) already is. A delicious, racy soundtrack that is equal parts cabaret, glam rock and trip-hop,Moulin Rougedoesn't disappoint. --Kristy Martin

Advantages: One of the greatest love stories Disadvantages: None (honestly - none)!
...to multi Oscar winning, The Moulin Rouge (Little Red Windmill)... the movie that hypnotizes your inner most child and takes you on a journey of magic and wonder.
Visionary director Baz Luhrmann (of Romeo & Juliet) presents his story of life in the bohemian quarter of Paris, in the late 1800's. His hero is the dashing Ewan McGregor who plays Christian, a penniless writer insearch of beauty, truth, freedom and love.
With a typewriter in one hand ... ...and powerful musical score makes Moulin Rouge more than a movie; it's a full night out experience. McGregor's performance excelled everyone's expectations, his singing was especially strong - hitting notes that most pop stars would not dare attempt! Lovable, charming, yet sexy enough to have any lady or gay man drooling in their seats. Kidman's performance is naturally stunning, as are the supporting roles of John Leguizamo (Toulouse-Lautrec), Jim ...

Advantages: You'll be swept away Disadvantages: You wont stop crying
...his first trip to the Moulin Rouge where "the rich and powerful come to play with the young and beautiful creatures of the underworld". Then enters the Sparkling Diamond, Satine, and she dazzles him beyond words. Unfortunatly, at the same time, a Duke is interested in investing in the Moulin Rouge and Harold Zidler, the owner, arranges a meeting between Satine and the Duke so they can 'make arrangements' of their own to sweeten the deal. However, ... ...writes a play for the Moulin Rouge which is a parody of his and Satine's own relationship, allowing them chances to sneak off together. When the other prostitues become jealous of Satine, they give the game away to the Duke who threatens to have Christian killed if he does not leave straight away. Satine, in a desperate bid to save his life, sends Christian away. However, when Chistian returns on the opening night of the show, the Duke must take ...

...writing a play for the Moulin Rouge. It is arranged for him to meet the beautiful coutesan (Nicole Kidman) and, of course, they fall in love. It is not easy going though, a rich aristocrat has his evil eye on her and tries to split them up, even resorting to trying to kill McGregors character!
The acting, singing and dancing are spectacular, there are both funny and sad parts, all of which is brilliantly acted. It will have you crying and laughing ...

...as Catcher Block, "ladies man, man's man, man about town", who is a top journalist and renowned playboy in New York.
Novak, with her love life in the spotlight has to be a role model for her readers, so while she is demolishing chocolate bars to quell her feelings for Catcher Block, he is busy devising plans to woo her for an exposé in his magazine...
This does sound like a predictable story, and that would be because it is, it's your typical chick-flick with the added bonus of cute 60s outfits, cute Niles from Frasier with an adorable subplot love story with the unplaceably familiar Sarah Paulson, and above all Ewan Singing.
This is the valentine's edition and has got to be a staple for any girly night in, along with the chocolate ice cream. If you liked Love Actually, Chicago or MoulinRouge you will love this.
And, as an extra bonus, there...

Actor(s): Ewan McGregor, Nicole Kidman, Jim Broadbent, John Leguizamo, Richard Roxburgh, Garry McDonald, Kerry Walker, Kylie Minogue, David Wenham
Director(s): Baz Luhrmann
Genre: Musicals & Music Films - Musicals & Other Music Films
Classification: 12 years and over
Production Year: 2001
Running Time: 2 hours 2 minutes
Plot: Cross LA BOHEME with CABARET, throw in a little bit of RENT, and you might almost begin to describe Baz Luhrmann's visually opulent, fast-paced, funny, heartrending MOULIN ROUGE. The film, which premiered as the opener to the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, is a musical set in 1899 Paris at the notorious Montmartre cabaret club, the Moulin Rouge. Directed by Baz Luhrmann (WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S ROMEO AND JULIET, STRICTLY BALLROOM), the movie stars Nicole Kidman as the high-kicking courtesan, Satine; Ewan McGregor as the sensitive poet, Christian; and John Leguizamo as the flamboyant artist and matchmaker, Toulouse-Lautrec. Luhrmann's use of eclectic lighting and saturated colour, the fast zooms and quick cuts of his camera, and his magnificent costumes and sets perfectly capture the excess and freneticism for which the Moulin Rouge was famous. Beautifully led by McGregor and Kidman, the flawless supporting cast brings to life the culture of belle epoque Paris with magical realism. Above all, the anachronistic, energetic contemporary soundtrack is what drives MOULIN ROUGE, with popular songs by L'il Kim, Christina Aguilera, David Bowie, and Beck as well as Kidman and McGregor adding their own superb vocals.
