What a movie, when it came out again, it was the movie that reminded me the power of the cinema, what people would have felt when they saw a movie in colour for the first time. To put it bluntly, I fell in love again.
The 2001 film, written directed and produced by Baz Luhrmann was a powerhouse and reminded us that musicals weren't old fashioned. That could be modern and wonderful. In essence this is what cinema was made for!
If we emphasise less on the story as the plot is thin, it's more about the visual, the music, the dancing, Ewan McGregor's voice, then you will not be disappointed.
In Bohemian Paris 1899, at the notorious Montmartre night club - The Moulin Rouge Nicole Kidman stars as Satine, the Courtesan of the story, she falls in love for poor writer Christian (Ewan McGregor) while being betrothed to an English Duke. We watch as they fall in love and as all great love stories - it ends in tragedy.
Top moments throughout the film, which also make it watchable for people who didn't grow up with musicals and the greats - Julie Andrews, Judy Garland and the like will appreciate familiar songs rejigged to fit in with the Bohemian vibe.
We hear Jim Broadbent singing Like a Virgin, you can't picture it, but when you see it, it somehow works!
This film was an opener to the 2001 Cannes Film Festival where it was greatly appreciated.
In addition to Nicole, Ewan and Jim's fantastic appearances we also see the wonderfully talented John Leguizamo as the somewhat flamboyant artist - Toulouse Lautrec, his matchmaking skills and fabulous clothes only add to the movie's charm.
The colours in this movie remind you of what it is like to be a child again and enjoy a good movie. Some people - when it first came out- found it garish, weird. Hello- this is Baz for you. But watching it a second time, you see things that weren't there before, colours are brighter, Kylie is smaller. You also realise that is Nicola Kidman and Ewan McGregor's real voices ! Brilliant movie. A must see for all.
