Moulin Rouge was directed by Baz Luhrmann under his production company Bazmark, and released in the cinemas in the UK in October 2001.

The cast includes actors such as Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting) and John Leguizamo (Romeo and Juliet- another Baz Luhrmann film), Nicole Kidman (The Others) and Jim Broadbent (Little Voice). Even Kylie Minouge has a role in Moulin Rouge as the Green Absinthe Fairy.

To me, Baz Luhrmann is the God of film directing. Moulin Rouge is definantly the best film I have watched in a long, long while, and Baz Luhrmann's originality, extravagance and amibiton is what makes Moulin Rouge such a fantasic, visually stimulating and exciting film to watch. The film is a very extravagant musical, and follows the same theme as other works of Baz Luhrmann, such as Romeo and Juliet. (Apparently the Moulin Rouge love song Come What May was originally written for Romeo and Juliet.)

The one thing that I think spoils the film is the very beginning, when Christian explains that 'the woman I love is dead.' I think that the ending would have more effect on the audience had we not been told at the beginning that she was to die. We now know what the whole film is leading up to.

The film is basically a show within a show. The plot folows a young poet, Christian, as he moves to Paris, befriends the Bohemians and falls for the starof the Moulin Rouge, Satine. Christian helps the Bohemians to write a play, 'Spectacular Spectacular', which they eventually get staged at the Moulin Rouge.

I don't think that the story in itself is very interesting- I don't believe that the film would attract such an audience had Baz Luhrmann not used the techniques he has throughout. I also noticed that during the promotional period of the film, it was advertised as a story rather then as a musical on film trailers etc.

I think that the songs used are all fantastic, even the Bolero tune played during the end credits. (Listen all the way through- very catchy! It grows on you!) For the soundtrack I paid around £13 for just the first CD when that was first released. Now you can buy two Moulin Rouge CD's together for around the price I paid for just the one. I would recommend you buy the two together as it's cheaper... and the second CD includes songs like Meet Me In The Red Room, which we don't get to hear all the way through even on the film.

I've been a huge fan of the movie since I first seen it at the cinema, I must have watched it well over 100 times since then! (And still cry at the end!) Everything about the film is exciting, and it's not the type of film that you see once and don't want to see again. Everytime I watch it I notice something I never noticed before. The camera spins, twists and twirls though fast and catchy musical numbers, and the colourful settings and costumes follow a certain Bollywood theme.

Overall, Moulin Rouge in my opinion is a work of visionary genius. I can't think of any other films which can work up so many different emotions- it makes me laugh, cry, sympathise.. it's inspirational. The motto, "The Greatest Thing You'll Ever Learn Is Just To Love And Be Loved In Return" is one that really puts things into perspective.

(Oh, and Ewan McGregors VERY GORGEOUS!!)

I don't usually like films where they burst into song all the time, but I really like this
