Do you believe, in beauty, freedom, truth and love then you my dear are a Bohemian revolutionary.
This film taught me to never judge a book by it’s cover or so to speak, as when this was first released on the big screen I was turned off by the idea that it was set in France in the 1980’s, but how I was wrong and once I sat back and devoured it I realised that this film was the ultimate turn on in fact and yes I mean in the sexual sense.
STORYLINE
Set in the late 1890s, this film depicts the story of a young English poet by the name of Christian that has travelled to France, in order to make his fortune and experience all that France has to offer.
Christian is introduced the under world and the new revolution through the care and attendance of Toulouse-Lautrec and his counterparts. Agreeing to write and perform in their latest play Spectacular
Spectacular, to empathise the presence of the new revolution, Christian is lured to the den of inequity of the Moulin Rouge. Here his job is to convince Satine the courtesan of the theatre to star and promote the play.
The meeting with Satine however goes more smoothly than planned, after she mistakes Christian for the wealthy Duke of Worcester, who Satine has been told to seduce in to providing money to refurbish the Moulin Rouge, by Harry Sidler boss.
Christian and Satine retire to her room, where Satine the smouldering temptress tries to seduce the poor un-aware poet, where it comes as no shock that they are disturbed and realising her mistake they are forced to pretend that they were rehearsing for the new play.
With help from the other cast members that happened to spying on the pair, and enter at the opportune moment they act out the main parts of the play to the Dukes interest and with his interest gained he agrees to finance the play and the refurbishment, but on one condition that Satine become his wife.
This is where the story begins and like a rollercoaster the story provides ups and downs with plenty of turns and twists to keep the viewer intrigued.
CHARACTERS
The main characters are that of Satine played by Nicole Kidman and Christian played by Ewan McGregor.
Their performances can only be described as out of this world, especially considering that both Nicole and Ewan did all their own singing throughout the film.
Other women in the line for the role of Satine were Rene Zellweger and Catherine Zeta Jones, thank goodness they choose Nicole as I do not believe the film would have been the same without her leading it.
GRAPHICS AND SETTINGS
Some of the settings were so over the top they were truly outstanding, such as the giant 60ft elephant in which Satine lived.
The settings were so in character with the mood of the film.
COSTUMES
Wow I want to look through the wardrobe for this film, so many costumes, that I would so love to wear.
The costumes provided extra detail and interest and in my case a craving for all that is wild in colour and design.
DANCING
If you Can Can Can and the Diamond Dogs, were some of the key scenes were dancing was used and it was so effective. I sat there imagining I was there, I was dancing and getting molested by all those rich gentleman…may be that was too much information.
SINGING/MUSIC
In two words I would describe it as “spectacular spectacular”.
FILM TRIVIA
Filming had to be delayed for a fortnight during the production as Nicole was fractured two ribs and injured her knee while rehearsing a dance routine.
Diamond are a girls best friend, well this was certainly the case of the necklace that Nicole was featured with at the beginning of the film. The Stefano Canturi necklace was made with 1,308 diamonds and was estimated at £1 million dollars.
Ozzy Osbourne provides the vocal effects of the fairy's scream when it turns evil.

This has to be one of my fave movies of all time. I had no idea what the film was going to be like when I first watched it and couldn't get over the shock of them singing Elton John songs! Liz
