Yes you can-can-can. You can go see this movie and be breathless through out. I have to admit, I usually don’t write reviews of movies that have more than 50 opinions already written. And since this movie already has more than 90 opinions done on it, I almost gave up. What could I say about this film that hasn’t already been said? 90 opinions is alot of words about one simple movie. A musical at that. Not the most popular of genres, musicals. Alot of people won’t even go to see a musical. Maybe they think of Disney movies. Or “The Sound of Music”. That would be enough to keep plenty of people away.

But yet it is not so. It has obviously been seen by many people. Maybe it’s Ewan McGregor (Emma, Trainspotting, Brassed Off) that has drawn them. Or Nicole Kidman (The Others, Practical Magic, Eyes Wide Shut), who has a surprising and incredible voice, pulling them in. But whatever the reason, it is a very popular movie with many people. People saying that it’s fantastic, inventive, energetic, ground breaking, talent packed. These are some of the comments from people who loved the movie.

However, there are also many who have torn this movie to shreds and hated it. Over-ripe colors, confusing, too much and pointless are some of the comments made about the movie by people who didn’t like it. There are those who think that Nicole Kidman’s voice is crappy and that she has no talent. Those who think that Ewan McGregor is just a pretty face and no acting ability. Some say that the movie is all glitter and no substance. Amusingly enough, this came from a person who thought that Austin Powers was witty and hilarious. Go figure.

So, what is it that made me want to write an opinion on a movie that already has so many opinions done about it? What makes this movie so special and fantastic and inspiring? I don’t know. What I do know is that I can’t stop watching it, singing it, thinking about it and rewinding it. Is it the music? It is jam packed with tunes from my teen years:

The first time I sat down to watch this movie, I hated it. It was too fast moving, to bright, too confusing. But then I had a household of like 8 people racing around and making noise and walking in front of the TV. I hate trying to watch movies that way. So, I went to bed. Then I sat down at my neighbors house to watch this movie and fell in love. With the entire movie. The plot, the acting, the music. It is by far the best musical I’ve seen in years, next to Into the Woods. Granted, it’s sappy, it’s a love story, it’s corny. There was a Moulin Rouge dance hall. The period it is based in was during the Bohemian Revelution, which was a true era. But other than that, it is pure fiction. Now, I know that nothing I say in my op is going to make you change your mind if you already hate the film. And if you love it, I’m preaching to the choir. But this is for those of you who haven’t seen it yet and haven’t made up your mind one way or another. If this is you, watch it. Watch it with an open mind and forget what everyone has said about the movie. Watch it and enjoy.

this has got to be the weirdest film i've ever seen...its meant to be set in 19th century Paris but they end up singing the Beatles and Whitney Houston...most strange. Nicole Kidman was amazing though. Good review, Nik

I liked this film but the camera-work was too messy! I got a headache after watching it. Ewan McGregor was lovely in it though! x

Having now seen it (and where might THAT have happened? ;)) I can safely agree with you!
