I'd been warned about the wackiness of this film, so sitting down to watch it, I had an element of doubt about whether I'd enjoy it or not.
Anyway, I've watched it two times since the first viewing, So I think that gives you the answer!
The Film Moulin Rouge is set in the 1890's, in Paris (although filmed in Australia) at the famous parisian nightclub The Moulin Rouge, famous for its wild women, nights, opium dens, and Bohemian artists.
Ewan MacGregor plays the penniless poet, Christian, who is brought in to write the show, Spectacular, Spectacular at The Moulin Rouge - thanks to Toulouse, the bohemian artist who befriends Christian, when his fellow artist, The Argentinian, falls through Christians ceilng on his first day in Paris!
Christian is taken to the wild Moulin Rouge, where Moulin Rouge's owner - Harold Zidler (The Marvellous Jim Broadbent) is hosting the wild festivities, including the can-can and the song 'Diamonds are a girl's best friend' sang by the Sparkling Diamond of the Moulin rouge, Satine, the courtisan (who sells her love) played by the outstanding Nicole Kidman.
Christian meets Satine and they fall in love, but Satine is pledged to sleep with the Duke (Richard Roxburgh), the financier of the plans to turn the moulin rouge into a theatre, who wants Satine all to himself and whom is willing to murder to have just that.
This film is a breath of fresh air to the film industry, The film's director Baz Luhrman gets it right every time. Baz Luhrmans films include, Romeo and Juliet and Strictly Ballroom - both classics, although Romeo and Juliet stands out along with Moulin Rouge as an original concept, what with Moulin Rouge mixed with music, songs and clever artistic camerawork, and Romeo And Juliet, the shakespeare novel reworked with a modern theme and rock music. Very clever, something which would be risky to anyone but Baz.
This film was somewhat of a surprise to me, the stars of the film were very much stars indeed, deserving every award won for this film.
Nicole Kidman really shone in this film, I was particuarly surprised at her singing and her comic acting which I would never imagined her to really be good at, but she was excellent, particuarly in the bedroom scene where she thinks Christian (Ewan) is the Duke, writhing about on the bed with Christian looking down at her as if she was a madwoman! You have to see it to understand!
Ewan Macgregor, as usual, was great as Christian. I have always known how great an actor Ewan was, but his strong singing really surprised me!
Jim Broadbent really shouldn't be forgotten in this opinion, he really is one of Britain's finest. Jim played the Moulin Rouge's owner, Harold Zidler fantastically. He sang, he danced, he dramatised and he made me laugh so much with his perfomances in this film - wow.
Richard Roxburgh - Someone whom I had never heard of before, was great as the Duke! Very funny, yet also played at being very dark, very good.
There were so many other great actors and actresses in this film and there is so much more I could mention. I won't go into any more detail about the film, that is the whole point of watching it - so there! Go watch it yourself *grin*
Last, but certainly not least - The soundtrack! The soundtrack to The Moulin Rouge is awesome, the film includes tracks by - Timbaland, David Bowie, Fatboy Slim (The remixed can-can tune - classic) Beck, The Lady Marmalade girls..the list goes on.
Oh, and don't miss the Green Fairy played by Miss Kylie Minogue herself - very surprising!
As an overview, well, this really shouldn't be missed, you'll either love it as I did, or hate it completely. One thing I will add though, is that its best watched a couple of times to really appreciate it all.
The Moulin Rouge is out now on VHS and DVD, usually priced at between £10-19.99. The soundtrack is also avaliable at prices between £9 -15.99.
