I was dragged kicking and and screaming to my seat, popcorn in one hand and drink in the other. My girlfriend sat down next to me, she was so excited and i just looked at her and thought, what had i got to sit through now!
How wrong could i have been, i went in thinking this is an absolute "Chick Flick" as they call it. As the film started i maintained this view and for the first 10 minutes or so, this hadn't changed. But as the film progressed my view changed and by the end i have to rate this film as one of the best i had ever seen. If you thought Titanic was moving, you have to see this to compare, and i think you'll agree this beats it ends up.
The story is about a club called the "Moulin Rouge" back in a time when it was allowed, for people to come and be entertained by dancers and women wearing not a lot of clothes. A poor poet and writer played by Ewan McGregor falls in love with the main dancer, played by Nicole Kidman, whose part is the Diamond Cortisanne. The story progresses, and shows the battle between that of the love between the 2 people being interrupted by an evil rich Lord who wants to marry the dancer, and indeed the marriage is arranged. The lord takes over the show and wants a play to be held, as the Moulin Rouge is struggling to stay afloat. He wants the story to end his way, with the dancer marrying the evil lord, but the two lovers end it their way. But an added twist to the story is that Nicole is dyeing, and only her mother and father know it, on the final production, she falls down, and dies lying in the arms of her new and forever lover Ewan. I even had tears in my eyes for god sake!!!
It is one of the most moving and gripping films i have ever seen, simply because it was so original, romance and comedy were combined in such a unique way that it caught the hearts of absolutely everyone in that auditorium. Not one person, many of them blokes, could say they weren't caught up in the plight of the two lovers. A "Chick Flick" maybe, but i would rate it as one to see espeicially with you girlfriend or partner as it is certainly something to share with them. Im sure glad i did now. It will have you talking about what happened for absolutely weeks after, and if you are at school, it is definetely something to tell your mates.
Nicole Kidman was absolutely superb in her role as the main dancer, she sung beautifully and acted equally well. Indeed it was her performance in this that has started her singing career, her first single being that of the one with a certain Robbie Williams! Having said that her performance should overshadow Ewan McGregor's role, he too was brilliant and together they made the film what it was.
The music and dancing all created a vivid atmosphere and the special effects were also great. The dominance of the ring leader, also made you feel really sorry for all the dancers as they were effectively treated as slaves by him.
Overall this film is an absolute must see, for sheer creativity and marvel, the writer must be commended. I certainly am getting this when released on video in February.
