Moulin Rouge is my favourite film of the year, no doubt about it. I thought nothing could beat Bridget Jones, but Shrek came along, and then this. Iti s pehrpas one of my favourite films of all time, so much so that it is one of only 2 or 3 films I've been back to the cinema to see again. The reviews for this film were stunning and it really doens't disappoint if you are a human. The main idea of this film are the 'Bohemian morals' of truth, beauty, freedom and love, which the film captures extremmely well. The film begins with Ewan McG (Christian) telling us this in a very hurried and bizarre scene which leads into the even more bizarre introduction to the Moulin Rouge - something not to be missed, but if you don't enjoy it (Nirvana mixed with the Can Can), don't walk out. It calms down after that. It is a very romantic plot and without the fantastic acting, filming and music this wouldn't be possible. Both Nicole and Ewan excel - for both of them this is the best film role they have ever had. You couldn't believe how convincing they are. It's odd to think that the Nicole we see today is the same woman of two years ago (think Practical Magic). She is a truly amazing actress, especially when comparing this role to Grace in The Others. Back to Moulin Rouge, and if Baz Luhrmann, the director, does not win the Oscar next year, it would be a travesty. The film is undoubtedly directed by him, with amazing camera angles and stunning scenery. The Moulin Rouge depicted in the film is truly a stunning sight to see. Only Luhrmann could have such a witty soundtrack as that which features in the film. I'll leave some surprises, but remember that it's set in 1900... I never knew Like A Virgin was released before then! You never thought it could be used in this context. The best musical moments of the film are definitely the 'Elephant Love Medley' (where several classic love songs are tied together to make a fantastic performance), Ewan's version of Your Song (swinging on the Eiffel Tower anyone ;-)) and Nicole's show stopping Diamond's Are A Girl's Best Friend with a little surprise thrown in the middle. The supporting cast also play a huge part in the film and without them it would not be as magic as it is. This film truly is magic - there has never been a film like it, and probably none in the future either, unless they look extremely copied from this! I honestly think that this film should sweep the Oscars next year - Best Actor, Actress, Director, Music (but I think it has to be an original score), Supporting Actor (for any of the fantastic male parts) and of course Best Picture. I can't wait for it to come out on video, even if the effect may not be quite a spectacular (spectacular!). I thoroughly enjoyed this film - Nicole Kidman is officially my favourite prostitute!
