I dragged 'him indoors' to see the Moulin Rouge on Friday night. It exceeded all my expectations. The other half however, didn’t enjoy it and didn’t quite understand it so this review in merely my own personal POV. I started writing this review a few weeks ago but now I forgotton the names of some of the key players – my brain is definitely shrinking with old age.
The stars You should all know by now that the main stars are the beautiful Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman. They both sing brilliantly - I was particularly impressed with Ewan. Kylie also makes a cameo style appearance in it. The rest of the cast is also very strong. Ewan is ‘Christian’ and Nicole is ‘Satine’. Other important characters are the owner of the Moulin rouge and ‘the duke’. Christian’s playwright / actor friends also add much colour to the plot.
The plot Christian is a British aristocrat who goes to Paris at the turn of the 19/20th centuries to find himself artistically as a writer, and to find love. He holes up in a less salubrious part of the city near the Moulin Rouge (MR). He joins up with other bohemians in his lodgings and inspires them to write a modern musical about love. So impressed are his new found friends they decide to introduce him to their sponsor – Satine. In turn, it is hoped she will persuade the owner of MR to let them put on their play. Satine is the glamorous star in the MR cabaret and meeting her isn’t easy as all the men want her attentions. In the MR we see some specatular dancing and singing with Satine being the star. Te story isn’t really underway at this point but the atmosphere created is electric. I wanted to get on my chair in the cinema and strut my stuff to the likes of Madonna’s Material girl and of course, Lady Marmalade. Obviously I managed to restrain myself when I realized no-one else was doing this. The Duke is also at the MR that night – wanting to make Satine his. In a comedy of errors Satine mistakes Christian for the duke and falls for him. She realizes her mistake too late. The Duke forces the owner to promise him Satine in return for finances or forfeit the MR. With this money the owner realizes his dream of becoming a ‘proper’ theatre – the first play to be Christian and co’s ‘Spectacular Spectular’. The play is written whilst Satine and Christian carry-on their illicit affair behind the back of the duke under the pretence of rehearsing the play. The play itself becomes a story about their love and there is a duke-like character in it. The duke finds out and isn’t happy. Satine suffers from a serious illness (consumption) and knows she is dying. She breaks it off with Christian before the duke kills him. On the opening night they perform spectacular spectacular. The duke tried to kill off Christian and Satine collapses fatally. By this time I was in uncontrollable tears.
Cinematography The film is very stylish. The scenery, costumes and music are really what the film is all about. This is a truly awe-inspriing film. I can see why MR style clothing are all the rage this season.
Conclusion Absolutely spectacular. But probably one for the ladies and those who enjoy a thumping soundtrack. My boyfriend just really didn’t get the film. Personally I liked the 'story in a story' touch.

Advantages: Great pop editing and effects. Jim Broadbent (ten times the actor of all the others)) Disadvantages: Pop songs don't work, original songs poor. Narrative very weak. Characterisation poor. (Toulouse Lautrec?????!!! Should this have been a cartoon?!)
