Before I went to the cinema last weekend I decided to have a look at all the opinions that have been written on new films. I came accross HUGE amounts on Moulin Rouge, almost all were telling me how brilliant it was. Thus, off I went to the cinema!
I actually went to the cinema with a friend of mine who'd already seen it, and wanted to see it again. This made it look even more promising!
The basic outline of the film: Nicola Kidman (Setine) and Ewan McGregor (Christian the poor poet!) play the stars of the show. It's set at the Moulin Rouge dance club in Paris, where Setine is the star of the show. Christian goes along one night with his friends and they set him up to spend the evening with Setine. But, the Duke has also set up the same meeting. Christian made it to the room first, and Setine thought he was the duke. She was ready to 'do the deed' but he wasn't there for that, he wanted to sing to her. And he did. They got together secretly and Setines manager soon found out, he wasn't pleased about it as she and the Duke had in fact got married by this point. She was promised to the Duke so that he would fund a show at the Moulin Rouge to keep it open. The Duke soon found out about their relationship though and on opening night of the show he tried to shoot them down when Christian stormed onto the stage. As usual in films, the couple got through this, but, alas, Setine had an illness. She kept on coughing blood at intervals throughout the film and once she left the stage, she died, in Christians arms.
Well, once this film had finished I turned round to see four of my friends in floods! Personally, I didn't think too much to this film.
I think that the storyline was quite weak. It was based on a real story but to be honest, it wasn't out of the ordinary. I found that the film was a bit too predictable, especially the ending.
The soundtrack was alright, it has a lot of old tracks on it that have been re-done. As it's kinda a musical, there's a lot of singing involved and Ewan McGregor really does have a fantastic voice (if it's him that sang!)
The film is also very funny in place, but as a person that doesn't find films funny very often, even this couldn't help it. The only thing that makes it funny are the times when they all burst into song at random times!
The acting in the film was good though. Even if the film wasn't! Nicola Kidman played Setine very convincingly, even the 'come to bed' scenes were well done. Ewan McGregor also played his part well, with no flaws at all!
Baz Luhrmann directed the film and I can't really make a comment on this as I've not seen anything else he's directed but I can comment on the costumes! They really were excellent, all the ones used for Nicola Kidman and her co-stars at the Moulin Rouge were really impressive. The mens outfits were pretty plain but you can't really expect them to be wearing beautiful ball gowns :)
Kylie Minogue was in the film aswell....but if you're a fan, don't go and see it just for that! Her part was about a minute long as a fairy!!
I don't really reccomend this film even though the 5 people I saw it with loved it! It's just a pity that I didn't!

I got Moulin Rouge out on video and didn't even watch the end. I found it surreal, but ultimately boring ( and I usually love musicals). It was great to read your review as, like you, everyone I know think's it's great.

I liked the Music better than the Movie.
Excellent review.

Advantages: Great pop editing and effects. Jim Broadbent (ten times the actor of all the others)) Disadvantages: Pop songs don't work, original songs poor. Narrative very weak. Characterisation poor. (Toulouse Lautrec?????!!! Should this have been a cartoon?!)
