“Moulin Rouge”, starring Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman, is one of the newest films out in the cinemas (well at the time of writing anyway!), although one should point out that there was an original Moulin Rouge out in the 1950s, 1953 if memory serves me correctly (?)
The film tells the story of the Moulin Rouge – the infamous Paris nightclub where the rich and influential come to play with the young and beautiful of the entertainment underworld (to paraphrase one of the lines in the film). Nicole Kidman plays the part of the star performer of the Moulin Rouge, the most beautiful of all the girls who “strut their stuff” (!) for the many male admirers who come to see them.
In order that the club can raise more money, a theatre group (including a young writer named Christian - Ewan McGregor) wants to put on a musical show, and this, among other things, involves transforming the club into a theatre. A Duke has been invited along to finance the show, and in return for his investment, he expects the “services” (use your imagination!) of the star of the show, Satine (Nicole Kidman).
This is all fine and well, except for the fact that Christian has fallen head-over-heels in love with Satine, and she certainly prefers his amorous advances to those of the Duke, whom she is more or less obligated to “serve”!
I won’t go into any more detail than that with regards to the plot, other than to say that it is perhaps one of the funniest films I have seen in a long time. Although it wouldn’t be categorised as a comedy, there are so many witty remarks and hilarious occurrences that a review without mention of the humour would not do the film justice.
In addition, the music in the film is absolutely superb. A great many modern songs are combined in different medleys, and I must say that I was very impressed by the voices of both Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. I can prove how keen I was on the music by saying that at this present moment, the soundtrack CD is being shipped to me from our good friends at a certain online shop!
One thing I would say about “Moulin Rouge” is that it may be best experienced in a (packed) cinema – nothing conveys better atmosphere than a full house, absolutely silent, that bursts into applause at various points throughout the film (when was the last time you applauded at the cinema, never mind more than once in the same show?!)
I’m not usually one for musicals, for dramas, or indeed for some comedies, however “Moulin Rouge” had an excellent mix of all three genres, possibly others too which I have missed, and I would thoroughly recommend going to see this film, or at the very least hiring it when the video is released. Full marks!

You're right, it has to be seen in a cinema. I didn't like this that much. It was visually brilliant and a refreshing change from the norm in terms of genre. I think it was probably because I just didn't care about any of the characters.

I could not agree more and guess what, I am also awaiting the delivery of the soundtrack from an online shop after watching the film avidly, 3 times now.
