Moulin Rouge is a veritable masterpiece of modern cinema, combining the old fashioned love story with dazzling modern visual effects and clever filming. It follows the fortunes of Christian, a young wannabe bohemian writer trying to make it in Paris during the turn of the century, who gets interrupted by a troupe of rehersing performers from Paris's seediest nightclub, the Moulin Rouge, subsequently getting pulled into this dark and flamboyant world and falling tragically for the club's star attraction, the courtesan siren Satine.
During the opening credits, we get introduced to Paris through billowing luxurious curtains fronted by an ever frentic conductor building up the films music hall atmosphere, which is then kept going by strong performances throughout. Much of the film's electricity comes from the clever weaving of familiar modern ballads into an almost operatic score, playing off the audience's pop knowledge while telling the story, and the amazing visuals, combining the grey monotones of the city with the vibrant colourful garishness of the music hall.
The genius of Australian director Baz Luhrmann shines through this well written tragi-comedy (with definite shakespearian influences), effectively pulling two star-crossed lovers into the seedy world of the Parisian night club using mesmerising imagery and song.
Add a heft dose of comedy and some excellent performances and singing by both Ewan Macgregor and Nicole Kidman, supported by a fantastic cast of music hall misfits (including a great John Leguizamo as a performing dwarf), and you are in for a evening of indulgent fantasy. A definite must-see.
