The fact that Mrs TheNeil desperately wanted to see this instantly set alarm bells ringing. She'd already had us sit through the lacklustre Evolution and the excruciating Cats and Dogs so naturally I was all too aware of her below par track record. Still, she's the boss and anything to keep my little bundle of loveliness happy. So what is it tonight my little lamb chop (oo-er)? "Oh we're off to see a musical". Pardon? Have you gone mad woman? Hollywood doesn't make musicals anymore. Have you gone stark raving… That look of disgust that she gets from time to time kind of renders argument useless. Oh well, let's get it over with.

Young Englishman Christian arrives in the Montmartre section of France looking for the excitement that only 1900 Paris can provide. Literally falling in with Toulouse Lautrec and his Bohemian counterparts, Christian finds himself caught up in their plans to stage a play at the infamous Moulin Rouge. Hailed as a writing genius, Christian must persuade the delectable Satine to agree to the production but finds himself instantly in love with the vision of loveliness. Being France though it's never as simple as it seems and following a misunderstanding, Christian is mistaken for rich financier the Duke of Worcester who Satine's boss, Zidler, is hoping will pay for a refurbishment for the Moulin Rouge. Caught in the act, Christian, Satine, and the rest of the Bohemians stage an impromptu play and convince the Duke that he should go ahead and finance the production and the refurbishment. But there is a hefty price to pay - When finished Satine will be his. Can true love win through? Can Christian and Satine live happily ever after? Whatever happens, the show must go on.

Fundamentally a love story, Moulin Rouge comes as something of a shock. I had no idea what to expect and with only the faintest inkling that it was musically based, I feared another slush-fest like Grease or something equally hideous. Is that what I got? No way.

From the first frame, the film is decidedly different and instantly drums up images of 1900 Paris. The visual style brings to mind the images and atmosphere of early French cinema even down to having a George Melles style 'man in the moon'. It doesn't stop there though and the first 20 minutes is almost a non-stop musical number that will have you scratching your head - What the hell is this?

The enormity of the opening 20 minutes conjures up images of the old time Hollywood musicals and even evokes memories of the hypnotic dance routines of the 30's. It's more than that though as the music has your brain baffled - Julie Andrews? What's going on? Ahh I get it, this is a tribute to The Sound of Music…only it isn't. The music flows seemingly endlessly but shifts it's style, tempo, period and ends up being the biggest summer-time megamix that you'll ever here. Moving from Marilyn Monroe through to Kurt Cobain by way of The Beatles, Whitney Houston and The Police, it's a non-stop rollercoaster that whips you into a frenzy.

This however can be a problem. By indulging us so completely, the film runs the risk of burning itself out , just look at Natural Born Killers with it's never ending scenes of rapidly cut violence to see what I mean. The editing here IS fast and no scene is held on for more than a couple of seconds. While this can be seen as merely pandering to the supposed limited attention spans that audiences are now cursed with, here it has a different effect. The kaleidoscope of colours, images, and scenes, when mixed with the music, create the Bohemian atmosphere needed. We can see everything at once, we can experience everything simultaneously, and we really do get caught up in the Absynthe fuelled excitement.

With burn out a problem, the film shifts more into comedy and indeed almost ends up being Monty Python-esque (well who else could hold an impromptu dress rehearsal to the tune of that can-can song (sorry, I don't know what it's called - music isn't my strong point) while being stuck in a giant elephant?). Comedy comes up time and time again and manages to encapsulate farce, double-entendres, and pure insanity (let me just state for the record that I was killing myself as Jim Broadbent warbled his way through Like a Virgin).

So it ends up being comedy then? Well no. This is very much a film of two halves. While the first half is almost fantasy, the film again changes style midway through. Becoming far more dramatic and sensitive, Moulin Rouge evolves into a more 'traditionally' romantic film but by then it's too late to escape. You've already been drawn in by the almost carnival section of the film and the burgeoning romance between Christian and Satine feels like a natural progression of the story.

The romantic setup maybe the classic love triangle and fundamentally it's nothing new. We know how it will end and we know how the story will progress but it doesn't matter. The emotions on display are captivating and so incredibly powerful that you can't help but be enthralled. Viewed retrospectively this combination of high drama and almost surrealist fantasy would sound wrong but here it's right as the transition from one state to another is well handled. The love story that is the film runs throughout and it's the strengthening romance that alters the style of the story - As passions increase, the frivolity is replaced with drama.

Encompassing such a broad range of styles, Moulin Rouge deserves a first rate cast and it actually manages to get it. Nicole Kidman has a ball as Satine and while you might not instantly pair her off with Ewan McGregor, the pair work fabulously together. Kidman's air of glamour and sparkle fit her role perfectly, while McGregor manages to incorporate raw passion with wide eyed innocence (and a look of Robbie Williams at times). That both stars sing is a bonus that one hardly expects to find. Whether it's slapstick or high drama, the pair are superb and really can't be faulted. Rounding off the 'love triangle' is Richard Roxburgh's duplicitous Duke of Worcester. The typical moustache twirling villain of old, the Duke is typically pantomime and is brought to life perfectly. Jim Broadbent puts in his best performance since Little Voice and is brilliant as Zidler. Again managing to combine comedy and tragedy, Broadbent displays the talent we know he possesses and memories of The Avengers and equally awful outings are banished. Overblown and typically theatrical, Zidler is the perfect Parisien showman. Slightly annoying is lisping John Leguizamo as Lautrec but fortunately he's on screen very little and doesn't annoy as much as he could. Filled with a wonderful supporting cast, I must make reference to teeny tiny Kylie Minogue who pops up early on as The Green Fairy. It might not be a crucial role Kyles, but you did us proud.

The production reeks excess and the visual style transports you back in time. The opulence sits alongside the grime of low life Paris but you never feel it. The end result makes you feel as though you're back in the magical world of the musical. Like the music that accompanies it, the look and feel of the film hits you in the face and if it's nothing else, it's never bland.

Director Luhrmann creates a magical environment and it doesn't take long until you're lifted out of that cinema chair and wrapped up in the wonder of the story (to quote Mrs TheNeil: You're not so much wrapped up as covered in Christmas paper with a bow strapped to your head, and on your way to Santa). The use of sound and music is marvellously inventive and you would never imagine that using 'modern' songs in a 1900 setting would work, but it does. The wall of sound that hits you is almost exhausting and supplements the onscreen action wonderfully, picking you up emotionally and leaving you exactly where Luhrmann wants you. The result? A spectacle that's captivating and entrancing throughout.

The rapid editing adds not only the Bohemian quality mentioned before, but lends the film an air of magic due to it's detachment from reality. Maybe that's what makes it possible to accept Elton John songs being crooned by Ewan McGregor. Who knows, who cares - it just works.

Personally I loved it. The first 20 minutes had me looking at my watch but soon after I was just as engrossed and enthralled as Mrs TheNeil. While I didn't go quite as far as blubbing at the end (although my good woman made the Kleenex shareholders very happy) I was left just as emotionally drained as everyone else was. Indeed the end of the film proved to be something of an eye opener. As the end credits rolled there was just a stunned silence. Normally when the credits start to roll, the assembled throng leap up and charge out of the doors but this was different. Nobody moved - myself and the other 15 people just sat in a state of near shock. Maybe nobody wanted to disturb the tranquillity of the moment, maybe they'd just realised that they should start breathing too (I don't think I had for about 25 minutes). This was a rare moment where an audience felt a strange emotional stirring (oo-er) and I was taken aback to be part of it. Oops, I've rambled off subject again haven't I?

Being a review by my good self (hey, that's a shock isn't it) I suppose I best have a go at trying to pick fault. Hmmm. Nicole Kidman can't say Moulin Rouge properly? Toulouse Lautrec has an annoying lisp? Actually the only 'problem' that I had with it was trying to find my feet and work out what sort of film it actually was. Not often I'm stumped for scathing criticism.

This will not appeal to everyone though. The Nintendo generation will find it boring, and the Ford Escort-lager posse will fail to grasp the emotional impact of the picture, but to everyone else I would wholeheartedly recommend it. Yes it's true, I'm going to recommend a 'modern' film. Perhaps branding it a masterpiece is a little strong but the very fact that the makers have had the audacity to make such a film shows a sense of purpose and belief that is generally lacking these days. This looks like this may be my film of the year…and Mrs TheNeil redeemed her film selection abilities. What's that dear? You want to go and see Harry Potter? Err, Ok.
