For Valentines Day I decided to rent a romance from the library and cuddle up in front of in for the evening with my hubby. My dad, brother and sister went to see it when it came out in the cinema and came back raving about it. It didn't look like my cup of tea but as it was Valentines Day I thought I'd give it a whirl.
It is hard to know where to start with this film. There is so much packed into this movie. I really liked this film. A large part of my liking for it comes from its daring to be different. I like romantic comedies and most that I like are very similar and predictable. While I do like your regular romantic comedies, this film is in a league of it's own. It is packed with colour, excitement, comedy, passion, music, fun and emotions. It is like one big ride that takes you through highs lows and loop the loops.
I had no idea what to expect when I sat down to watch this. I only had my family's recommendations to go by and I knew it was linked to the stage and hookers. I had no idea it was a musical. I really enjoy musicals. Words of love in song are so much more powerful than just spoken word. I still feel full of passion and emotion myself after watching it. You know a film is good when it gets you that involved in it.
This film is surreal, but in a good way. It is fast moving and never boring. The film opens in Paris 1900. Old fashioned looking and part theatrical too. You are transported into this magical new or should I say old world. It all seems pretty normal as we watch Christian (Ewan McGregor one of our leads), a passionate poet typing on his typewriter. So then I was thinking - ok this is going to be a normal period drama film. No, not by a long shot.
All of a sudden this peaceful scene is gate crashed by someone coming through the roof. His neighbours on the floor above peer through the hole in the floor looking down at a man dangling down unconscious. The group of men are dressed as ladies and ask as the dangling man makes them one short from their drama rehearsals, could Christian help. We then hear them sing 'The hills are alive' from the sound of music and I'm thinking, what?? That film wasn't around then. What is this film?
They break boundaries a lot throughout this film by mixing all styles of music. Old and new and making this old world hip and exciting. This very strange combination, although really weird for me to start with really worked. This film dares to be something different and outrageous. Brave as it could have gone either way and been a complete turkey, but it isn't. It is more like a beautiful peacock.
And so to the story. Our young writer Christian who believes in love above all else (despite having never been in love before), goes out on the town with his newfound actor friends. They go to the most happening club in Paris. A place for much drinking, dancing and frolicking. Where rich men could buy themselves a girl for the night.
It is here Christian meets the woman he is to fall in love with. She is called The Sparkling Diamond (Nicole Kidman). We first see her being lowered on a swing from the ceiling, glitter falling around her, dressed in a glittering glamorous outfit. She sings 'Diamonds are a girls best friend'. She gets much attention from the men in the audience. Two in particular are very interested and so the love triangle begins.
At the end of the song, Satine (The Sparkling Diamond) picks a man to spend the evening with. Through a case of mistaken identity, Satine picks Christian. You see, Satine longs to be a proper actress. I'm sure prostitution isn't anyone's dream , but she does what she has to, to stay off the streets and keep performing. And the Duke, who is sitting next to Christian is willing to invest in the theatre and make her dream reality if she gives herself to him. I don't want to tell you any more of the story. I'll let you discover the rest yourself.
Everything about this film is excellent. It is a true feast for the eyes and ears. The music is spectacular, the story creative and inspiring, the costumes are colourful, filming is new different, exciting and fast, the acting is beautiful and hilarious.
Nicole and Ewan really excelled in their roles. A huge part of the film is the music and both actors have beautiful singing voices. Both so pure and pretty. Their voices harmonise perfectly. The pair share one lovely secret song called Come What May. It got me emotional even thinking about it then. They, and the rest of the cast sing creative compilations of love songs by artists including David Bowie, Paul McCartney, The Beatles, Elton John, Madonna and even Nirvana.
Other musical talents involved include Fat Boy Slim on a revolutionary 'Can Can Can' and Pink, Christina Aguilera, Mya and Lil Kym on 'Lady Mamalade' which was extremely popular on release.
The film is rated 15. It has a running time of 122 minutes.
I really enjoyed watching and writing about this film. If you have watched and enjoyed any musicals you are bound to love this. I hope you enjoyed my review and I'm sure if you do watch the film that you will enjoy it.
Thank you for reading. I'd love to hear any feedback you have on either my review or the film. Happy Reading.
...a play at the infamous Moulin Rouge. Hailed as a writing genius, Christian must persuade the delectable Satine to agree to the production but finds himself instantly in love with the vision of loveliness. Being France though it's never as simple as it seems and following a misunderstanding, Christian is mistaken for rich financier the Duke of Worcester who Satine's boss, Zidler, is hoping will pay for a refurbishment for the Moulin Rouge. Caught ... ...Fundamentally a love story, Moulin Rouge comes as something of a shock. I had no idea what to expect and with only the faintest inkling that it was musically based, I feared another slush-fest like Grease or something equally hideous. Is that what I got? No way.
From the first frame, the film is decidedly different and instantly drums up images of 1900 Paris. The visual style brings to mind the images and atmosphere of early French cinema even down ...

Advantages: Over 6 hours of extra material; Colourful, exhuberant, entertaining film; Amazing soundtrack Disadvantages: I would have liked some PC bonuses; Some of the songs are too catchy for their own good!
Moulin Rouge is a classic love story, given the Spectacular Spectacular treatment by visionary director Baz Luhrmann. It is a musical of such magnificent proportions, of such audacity, of such colour and such exuberance that I fell in love with it when I first saw it at the cinema, and which I had to buy for my DVD collection when I found it on BOGOF at HMV earlier in the week. I couldn't quite believe my luck, having found out just how good the ... ...at the notorious nightclub, the Moulin Rouge. Satine mistakes the poet for a wealthy Duke who Ziddler is hoping will provide investment into the club, and takes him up to her room where she appears to fall for him in return. All too soon though, it becomes ...

THE RAUNCHY RED MILL Review ofMoulin Rouge (Special Edition) (DVD)by
mrsandrewsjk
Advantages: For me - seeing Jim Broadbent singing 'like a Virgin' Disadvantages: If you dont like musicals - don't watch it.
Moulin Rouge - translated means Red Mill but this film sure ain't about grinding flour! I was lucky enough to see the film before UK release in Adelaide back in June last year. I wasn't sure what to expect - the Voulez Vous Couchez music video looked a bit raunchy so I had it in my head there would be lots of sex (you know what imagination is!)
A 20th Century Fox film directed by Baz Luhrmann and brilliantly choreographed by John O'Connell it stars ... ...in a Parisian nightclub (The Moulin Rouge)back at the turn of the 20th century. Ewen Macgregor looks wonderful as the innocent young aspiring writer who falls in love with her. Jim Broadbent gives a brilliant performance as the owner of the nightclub.
To begin with the film is very startling - lots of colour - shots flashing from one scene to another - a riot of sound and sights - 'how long can I deal with this?' I wondered. This settles down (a ...

DVD Description
Cross LA BOHEME with CABARET, throw in a little bit of RENT, and you might almost begin to describe Baz Luhrmann's visually opulent, fast-paced, funny, heartrending MOULIN ROUGE. The film, which premiered as the opener to the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, is a musical set in 1899 Paris at the notorious Montmartre cabaret club, the Moulin Rouge. Directed by Baz Luhrmann (WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S ROMEO AND JULIET, STRICTLY BALLROOM), the movie stars Nicole Kidman as the high-kicking courtesan, Satine; Ewan McGregor as the sensitive poet, Christian; and John Leguizamo as the flamboyant artist and matchmaker, Toulouse-Lautrec. Luhrmann's use of eclectic lighting and saturated color, the fast zooms and quick cuts of his camera, and his magnificent costumes and sets perfectly capture the excess and freneticism for which the Moulin Rouge was famous. Beautifully led by McGregor and Kidman, the flawless supporting cast brings to life the culture of belle epoque Paris with magical realism. Above all, the anachronistic, energetic contemporary soundtrack is what drives MOULIN ROUGE, with popular songs by L'il Kim, Christina Aguilera, David Bowie, and Beck--as well as Kidman and McGregor adding their own superb vocals.
