Hudson. Playing a musician in a Russian circus who gets talked into defecting by a pal and does so in the middle of Bloomingdale's. A great concept, to be sure, but writer-director Paul Mazursky doesn't seem to know where to go from there. Williams winds up living in the same kind of poverty that he did in Russia, casting about for a way to make a living while both wallowing and drowning in the sudden tidal wave of freedom. Mazursky wants to make a point about how little we appreciate what we have, but he fails to entertain in the process--or at least to engage in a consistent way. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

General Impressions
Let me start this review by saying nothing in Moscow is easy. We spent a great deal of time in confusion! This is partly because of the language barrier. In France, Italy or Spain you can make out at least some of the written word or you find you actually remember something from school after all. Russian cyrillic is, however, incomprehensible to the English eye. Then there's the fact that Moscow isn't really set up for tourists at all. Nobody "tells" you anything. Nothing is signposted or explained. For example there did not appear to be a single sign pointing to the Lenin Mausoleum (and I wish I could tell you where he was now, but I still don't know, we never found him), the metro stations are often unmarked and unsigned and there is nothing explaining the three different types of ticket that can be bought ...

My husband and I stayed a the Hudson during September 2008, on my first trip to the states. We were away for 2 weeks, of which 5 nights were spent at the Hudson. This meant that we could compare this hotel to several others in the US, including one other in New York. Generally, the Hudson came out of this very well!
We booked the Hudson online, through hotels.com, a procedure which was nice and simple and allowed us to look at several different hotels before making our choice. We were initially attracted to the Hudson because of it's easily accessible location and because the pictures we found on the internet made it look unlike anywhere we had stayed before!
The hotel is extremely image conscious, the website gave lots of information about the designer (Philippe Starck), loads of pictures and presented the hotel as a "cool ...
Advantages: A unique cultural experience which you will never forget. A high "WOW!" factor. Disadvantages: Without local knowledge or a grasp of the language, it could possibly be pretty intimidating
One of my biggest regrets is never having to been to Berlin whilst the wall was up. Amanda, my wife, once managed to visit East Berlin - with no papers - but that's a different story! Since the demise of Communism, I've been behind the former Iron Curtain twice. On this occasion, we visited Moscow.
There's a lot to say about Moscow and I won't be able to say it all here, naturally - but I'll do my best to give an informative glimpse of this fantastic city. I can't comment on hotels because we're lucky enough to have friends who own a flat in Moscow, and that's where we stayed. Let me try to tempt you, anyway!
I guess the first thing to say is that the currency is a little confusing - in the sense that you're never quite sure whether to use US dollars or Russian roubles. Most of the time it's fairly obvious but it helps if you ...

DVD Description
Vladimir Ivanoff (Robin Williams) is a Russian saxophone player for the Moscow circus. Life in Russia is difficult and unrewarding, but he silently accepts the corruption of the Communist party and the constant threat of KGB spies because he enjoys his job, has a steady girlfriend, and loves his family. However, his friend Anatoly (Elya Baskin) dreams of freedom in America and makes plans to defect when the circus announces an American tour to New York. Their trip to the Big Apple is thrilling, full of exciting revelations, and on their last day in New York they are allowed 30 minutes to shop in Bloomingdale's, surrounded by tempting American merchandise. While Anatoly loses his nerve, Vladimir is awakened with the desire to defect and manages to outrun the KGB. Suddenly Vladimir is a free man with no family or friends and no chance of ever returning to his homeland. With the help of a Bloomingdale's security guard (Cleavant Derricks) and a pretty Italian makeup counter saleswoman (Maria Conchita Alonso), Vladimir finds a place to stay and a wide variety of odd jobs to start out his new life in the United States. As Vladimir struggles to make it in America, he longs for his family and his homeland, wrestling with the magnitude of his choice. Williams gives an honest and heartfelt performance in this touching and witty comedy by Paul Mazursky.
