supposed to be the first time and he calls her "Maya" in his opium fuelled state. So the king leaves her bed and takes more and more opium and more and more mistresses and no one is happy. On her travels Maya meets Jai Kumar, the king's sculptor, who falls for her seductive charms and she becomes his most favored model and lover. Maya falls in love with Jai and for the first time in her life she feels out of control. In the meantime the king is still obsessed with Maya, pretty much ignores his wife and continues to bed other women when he's not searching high and low around the kingdom for Maya.
What happens when the king catches up with Maya? What is the king's relationship with Jai Kumar? Do Tara and Maya ever achieve happiness in their lives? Just how vindictive can people be in the name of love and lust and revenge?

in the tournament and they have got away with it. End of film, or at least it should have been. Not content with the one chance of glory, William craves more, to become a Champion Knight and to please his dear old dad (played by Christopher Cazenove).
Can they pull off this big scam? ( "who cares?" springs to mind! ) Having convinced his friends, the three set off for the next tournament and chance upon a butt naked Geoffrey Chaucer (played by Paul Bettany). Luckily Chaucer is a master forger and can give Thatcher the fake legal documents he needs to compete in the exclusive battle games. Chaucer joins the happy band and the ride off to find their fame and fortune in the next town.

Advantages: Describes the era well, entertaining, very 70s Disadvantages: Sketchy plot, shallow characters, lack of depth and direction
the characters introduced later in the book. They were banale and miserable and wondered if what the point was in introducing them at all other than to give a 'period' caricature. There seemed to be no genuine feeling in any of them just a desperate clinging to themselves and sometimes to others while each holding onto their 'dark secrets' afraid from being ridiculed and humiliated. I felt there were too many characters for me to choose one then see them develop which they hardly did anyway.
Conclusion
Strangely, Tales of the City is like a soap, you know it's not brain science but it does draw you in. The book hooked me in a way and I'm planning to read more of the series such as 'MoreTales of The City' and 'Further Tales of the City'. A good read if you like a soap-style character and plot development satire served a la 1970s. I don ...
