There are a large amount of varied clips on the DVD, which make it fast-moving and includes a lot of material, which is good, but personally, I would have preferred fewer and longer pieces. The idea of just an apparently random selection of parts of interviews and sketches doesn't really work, in my opinion. I would have liked to see a more rigid format, either with a chronological review of the work or a documentary style DVD with illustrative clips.
This is the latest BBC DVD on Frankie Howerd, as it was released last year and is currently available from Amazon for £8.98. The ComedyGreats collection also includes similar releases on other comedians such as Les Dawson, Tony Hancock, Spike Milligan and Tommy Cooper.
As for this Frankie Howerd one, it is definitely worth having for any fans, but I doubt it is the best compilation out ...

, the poignancy of the situation does not by any means give an overly intense or heavy atmosphere to the film. I would rather say that it is an extremely endearing family comedy- not unlike Home Alone. Family relationships are depicted in every aspect, including the comfort and help that butler and/or nannies can bring to a household. This perfectly suits the various thematic elements that include mainly: Love, friendship, and some deeper issues like divorce and/or broken families.

INTRODUCTION
In 1964 I was taken with school to one of our local cinemas (now ALL the cinemas in the town have gone) to watch David Lean's classic film 'Great Expectation'.
It was old, it was black and white - it was WONDERFUL!!
I have seen many adaptions of the book since that day 45 years ago, but I have never seen one that compares to Lean's film or that was so true to Dickens' book.
What a pairing - Dickens and Lean!!
Dickens's rich characters and gothic Victorian atmosphere combined with the unique and masterful direction of David Lean led to a true cinema masterpiece that has weathered the years well.
Last year I found a new DVD of the 1946 film and it is that DVD that I am about to review.
