"Monty Python and the Holy Grail" was the first attempt by the team to fit their humour into a narrative format, and somewhat to my surprise it works perfectly. The story is familiar enough - Graham Chapman's King Arthur rounds up a group of knights to enter Camelot - "a silly place" that's "only a model" - and find the Holy Grail. It doesn't work out, and the knights have to fight nymphomaniacs, strange beasts and, worst of all, Terry Gilliam animations before the climactic final at Castly Argh. Much of it is silly rather than funny or even well-plotted, and the film occasionally resembles a series of sketches rather than a story, but the humour is the point of the film rather than any more traditional movie elements. There are mistakes - in my opinion, the ending is misjudged - but the team have brains as well as wit and the result is a surprisingly intelligent comedy.
