Hiya guys!! Well here I am with another film review! Big surprise I know!! This time it's on one of my more favourite computer generated films.......

MONSTERS INC

Well here I go folks....some quotes from the experts!

"Overflows with clever gags, stunning visuals, shrewd matching of vocal talent and animated characters."
Gary Thompson, PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS

"This flick is absolutely fantastic from top to bottom, beginning to end!"
John Venable, SUPERCALA.COM

"If Monsters Inc. isn't the "instant classic" that the Toy Story films are, well then it's pretty damn close."
Scott Weinberg, EFILMCRITIC.COM

Well I totally agree with these guys and they obviously seem to like it!

***TECHIE STUFF***

This film has a U certificate so there is nothing for the parents to be worried about!!

This film has a running time of 88 minutes

Monsters Inc is presented to you by Walt Disney and Pixar Animations.

I have the DVD version of this film and bought it for £15.99 at HMV, although I'm quite sure that this can be obtaine at all the usual places....Woolworths, Virgin, Amazon....etc...etc. Bear in mind people that at the time when I bought it, it had only just come out so I'm quite sure that the price has gone down since then!!

Monsters Inc is available on VHS, DVD as a single disc or a two disc collector's edition. I have the single disc edition which isn't in widescreen but it can be bought in widescreen.

***DVD FEATURES***

For The Birds:
This is possibly the best extra, and possibly the best short video I have ever seen in my life. I couldn't stop laughing when I first saw this and it's worth getting the DVD just to see this little show!! It won the 2001 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film!!

All-New Animated Short Film, Mike's New Car.

Finding Nemo trailer.

Outtakes and another short little film called Company Play.

Deleted Scenes

Disney Storytime

Peek-A-Boo: Boo's Door Game

Overall for a DVD this isn't bad! The variety of the extras is quite surprising for a disney film!!

***VOICES OF ACTORS AND ACTRESSES***

John Goodman - One Night At McCools, Coyote Ugly.

Billy Crystal - When Harry Met Sally, America's Sweethearts.

James Coburn - Snow Dogs, American Gun.

Steve Buscemi - Mr. Deeds, Big Fish

Jennifer Tilly - The Haunted Mansion, Liar Liar

Bob Peterson - A Bug's Life, Finding Nemo

***CHARACTERS***

James P. Sullivan (Sulley):
Voiced by actor John Goodman. Sulley looks like a very large cuddly bear.....all except for the fact that he's bright blue with purple spots all over him, huge claws and the best scarer that Monsters Inc has ever seen. He may be tough and mean, but underneath he's a really nice guy!!

Mike Wazowski:
Voiced by actor Billy Crystal. Michael is the exact opposite to Sully. He's about one tenth the size of sully, is bright green, has one eye and basically looks like a small planet with two legs. Don't mess with this little guy though or he'll kill ya! Mike is is Sulley's partner at work and has to make sure that everything goes smoothly for him. Michael is Sully's personal little sidekick and also has a crush on our next character...

Celia:
Voiced by actress Jennifer Tilly. Think Medusa, only this girl won't turn you to stone!! She has arms and legs that look like tentacles and is a bright purple kind of colour. She has a mutual crush on Mike and like Mike she also has one eye. Celia works on the reception of Monsters Inc.

Mr.Waternoose:
Voiced by actor James Coburn (Now sadly deceased). Waternose looks like a giant crab, with five eyes and claws that quite frankly will never need a manicure! The head of Monsters Inc, the company has been in Waternoose's family for generations and he'll do anything to keep it going.

Randall Boggs:
Voiced by actor Steve Buscemi. Sulley's arch enemy. Randall is the number 2 scarer in the company and nothing gets up his nose more than Sulley beating him at anything. Randall is a giant purple chameleon who can blend in with any of his surroundings when he chooses to. A sneaky and mean monster!

Roz:
Voiced by actor Bob Peterson. Roz would be a giant slug with a very bad hair do and glasses. Roz is always chasing Mike up for not doing any paperwork and to be honest is a little creepy!

***PLOT***

Welcome to the Monster World and more importantly to Monsters Inc, the top supplier of energy and power in the world. The Monsters Inc motto is:

"MONSTERS INCORPORATED.....WE SCARE BECAUSE WE CARE."

So what does this mean? Well in the monster world, the only way to get electricity to homes is by scaring the living daylights out of children and then collecting their screams. Scream = power. The only way to get it is by going through a door into a childs' bedroom in the human world. Sounds simple enough but the company is under pressure. Every employee has to been taught to fear children....they are toxic and if one touches you.... that's it...your dead!

Kids just don't get scared like they used to. Too many violent crimes on TV nowadays! Monsters Inc however isn't giving up and their best scaring team is one of James Sullivan or Sulley as he likes to be called and Mike Wazowski.

On a particularly normal day at work, Sulley and Mike are trying to break the all-time scare record. At the end of the day when Mike has once again forgotten to file his paperwork, Sulley offers to do it for him as Mike has a date with Celia.

When Sulley goes back to get Mike's paperwork he finds a door that has been left there after everyone has gone home. Unfortunately Sulley has let out a little girl by accident who is now running around the factory. Sulley manages to catch the child and goes off to see Mike whose in the middle of his date!

Realising that they are in trouble....the only option is to find the little girl's door and send her back to the human world. Not that easy however and here is where the hilarity ensues. Mike and Sulley get quite attached to the little girl who they have named Boo. But the more they grow to care for Boo the more they realise that everything they have been taught about how toxic children are, is a lie. Children don't hurt monsters and they aren't evil! Mike and Sulley have to find a way of getting her back or they themselves will be banished from the Monster World forever.

WARNING: HUGE PLOT SPOILER HERE....DO NOT READ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW!!!

The reason that there was a door there the night Sulley went back for Mike's paperwork was because Randall wanted Boo. It seems that Randall wishes to revolutionise the scaring industry as the company is in so much trouble and by doing so he believes that he will make huge amounts of money and finally beat Sulley.

Now Sulley and Mike have the added task of protecting Boo from whatever Randall has in store for her.

Can't say anymore as it'll spoil it for those of you who haven't seen it!

***QUOTES***

What would a Disney film be, without some funny bits stuck in their films! Here's a few to get the ball rolling.

MIKE: "Ok kid send me a postcard....that's Mike Wazowski, 22, Mike Wazowski ya got ya life back lane!"

BOO: "MIKE WAZOWSKI!!!!"
MIKE: "Very good...now Bon Voyage!"

SULLEY: "You need to exercise."
MIKE: "I need to?!......look at you...you've got your own climate!!"

RANDALL: "What happens when the whistle blows in five minutes?"
MIKE: "I get a time out?"
RANDALL: "Everyone goes to lunch! Which means the scarefloor will be......?"
MIKE: "...........painted?"

***MY PERSONAL OPINION***

I haven't found a person yet who does not like this film! My favourite voice is Billy Crystal as Mike. Personally all the voices chosen for this film were chosen fantastically well. When you watch the film, it's as if the writers designed these characters based on the actors and actresses themselves. Only John Goodman can do Sulley and only James Coburn could have done Waternoose.

The comedy in this film comes from Boo without a doubt. This little girl turns everyone's world upside down and as a result creates a lot of the hilarity in the film. Boo is probably the cutest little girl that disney have created yet but there is also plenty of slapstick comedy, most of which involves Mike or Sulley getting clocked in the head, choked, falling over something or finding someway to hurt themselves!

I was even more impressed with Disney on this occasion as they have found an ingenious way of finding a fear that small children have, about monsters under the bed or being afraid of the dark and turned it into something funny. In a way it kind of reassures children that you don't have to be afraid of monsters and lets them have a good giggle about it. My two twin cousins are now reassured by the fact that monsters are afraid of children too and as a result, they aren't scared of the dark anymore!!

This is a must see family film. Pixar have certainly outdone themselves with this film. The special effects of each animated film that Disney and Pixar produces just goes from strength to strength. It's suitable for everyone and I was extremely impressed at the DVD features which are sure to keep the kids amused for a while! Parents may now breathe a sigh of relief!

As always the decision is yours!

Happy trails kids!

Leila :)
