Ah, how those clever Disney people know how to make a good film. With the help of Pixar, who give us the animation that makes this film great.
We took the little one to the cinema to see this, and knew we had to buy the video. He loved it. We loved it.
So, down to Asda, who had the video for £10.84 (£12.99 anywhere else) and wrap it up for his birthday.
So, what do you get for your money? Well, a short animation called The Birds was probably worth the £10.84 on its own! How you can make a tale about a dozen little dickie birds sat on a telegraph wire along with a rather large (crane I think!) mate amusing, I do not really know. These five minutes will have you in stitches.
But, we are here to review the main feature. Monsters Inc. So, what is it about? Well, there is a parallel world inhabited by monsters, the city of Monstropolis. The city itself is much the same as any worldly city that we know, but it has only one source of power. Scream. They bottle the screams of human children to power their city and world!
A select team of monsters are given access to the bedrooms of our children. They appear in the rooms of the little ones through wardrobe doors and scare the wits out of the kids, bottling the energy from the screams in the process, before escaping back to the power plant. If you ever wondered why a child wakes up screaming in the night, you now know! So, who are the key players in Monstropolis? Well, there is our hero, Sully, a giant blue hairy creature who actually seems quite loveable until he appears in a bedroom (voice by John Goodman). His flat mate is Mikey, a little one eyed green creature (voice by Billy Crystal) who works in tandem with Sully in the Monsters Inc factory. Sully scares, Mikey facilitates the access to the bedrooms and the bottling of scream!
The obtaining of scream is a high-risk trade. Be touched by a child, and the monster faces contamination and likely death. When one of their colleagues is spotted with the sock of a child on his back, a decontamination team enters the plant to sort the problem out, with hilarious consequences.
Monsters Inc is a competitive workplace and needs to be so. As our children get harder to scare, the monsters leaping out of the wardrobe are securing less scream and a power shortage in Monstropolis is the result. Sully is fighting out a battle with another monster, Randall (who has the chameleon like ability to merge invisibly in to any background), to see who is top scream producer this month!
Well, the film develops when Sully discovers Randall has been cheating and inadvertently allows a human toddler in to Monstropolis. Chaos erupts as Sully and Mikey try to return Boo to her rightful home, uncovering a dastardly plot in the process.
The script is full of life and the animation excellent. While I have never found that computer generated cartoons give you the same loveable creatures as traditional sketch cartoons, Monsters Inc gets close. There is little opportunity in the 88 minutes for a child to get bored, while the humour hits successfully at both adult and child minds.
We have visits to the Himalayas, where we discover that the Yeti is in fact real, and along with his friend Big Foot an outcast from Monstropolis. We also have a superb chase scene where the graphics make the viewer feel as if they are on some sort of roller coaster and create a genuine tension for the viewer.
This is a great film. Simple enough script for the little ones to follow. Intelligent enough for the big ones to stay in the room. Whoever came up with the idea of out-takes for a cartoon is also a genius, helping to bring these characters to life even more.
Buy it. Watch it. Over and over.

I adore this film, but I have to disagree with one point - I definitely think that computer-animated characters are as cute as sketch ones! Boo is adorable! Have you seen Toy Story 1 & 2?? Emma x

Advantages: Everybody likes monsters inc, whether your an oap or a toddler it is suitable for the whole family. This film has alot of funny moments and has hidden jokes in for the older audience. Disadvantages: This film can drag on a little and it is east to predict what is going to happen next.
