This is a review of the standard edition DVD, not the collectors edition which has extra features on it, but of course is more expensive! You don’t get a fancy box with the collectors edition either, so in my view it’s not worth buying, just an extra source of revenue for Disney.
I loved Monsters Inc so much at the cinema that the first day the DVD was available to buy, I bought it! I’m not the kind of guy who jumps to a DVD as soon as its released, I normally wait for the price to go down first, makes sense see, afterall, a couple of months after they have hit the shops and are retreating back in the charts, the suddenly go down to £9.99 from about £14.99! But Monsters Inc just had to be bought there and then!
The Story
Ok, so a quick run down, there are plenty of opinions out there on the film, including mine (blatant plug eh!?) that will do the film justice, but I’m reviewing the DVD.
PLOT
The film revolves around 2 monsters (basically) who work in a power factory. The idea is that they enter children’s closets from all around the world at night when they know they are going to be asleep and scare them. Those scares give them the power they need to give power to the inhabitants of Monstropolis (Monsters world in other words!). The catch is, they are scared of the children themselves. They think that the touch of a child will cause them instant death!
So, when a child get’s out and is wandering around the Monsters Inc factory, all hell is let loose, but then Sulley and Mike, the 2 main monsters in the film which you see everywhere take it upon themselves to look after the kid, their main objective to get the kid back to it’s own bedroom, but that requires the unique
child’s door, which proves harder than it seems. It’s an enjoyable roller coaster of a film from here on!
Animation is wonderful in this film and would easily qualify as one of the best made and best looking animations out there. Everything about the film is wonderful, from the monsters themselves, right through to the tiny bit’s you don’t see the first time round. When looking at specific parts in the film, you will realise just how well made this film really is, and that’s the wonderful part of owning the DVD, unlimited viewings!
DVD
THE DVD ITSELF
The DVD itself comes in one of the normal plastic boxes. At least it doesn’t come in one of those warner brothers nasty, horrible, crap pieces of cardboard! Don’t you just hate those!? It’s very attractive, which pictures of the monsters and a the really cute (did I just say that!?) child on the front cover. Kids will love the look of it just as much as adults and it really does just say ‘look at me, you’ll love me’ and gives you a sneak peek into the way the film is set, i.e. it gives away the comedy aspect and the connection between the monster world and the child world.
Take a look at the back cover and you are instantly shown the main characters of the film, ranging from the quirky little co worker to the supposedly sexy girl that mike is after. The box really is presented well and is fun to look at itself! Sad I know, but true!
DVD EXTRA FEATURES
Mike’s New Car You will have had to watched the film to get this one really. Mike likes his car’s, he has a precious car in the film which he talks to and cherishes, however we only see it in one scene, so they have come up with an extra feature!
Mikes new car is a funny little short film (about 5 minutes long) starring Sulley and Mike and of course, Mikes New Car. With so many gadgets, a small car and a big monster squeezing himself in, obviously there are things to go wrong! Mike ends up inside the engine, everything going wild, he ends up getting burnt and more, to top it all off, once he’s got going all the wheels fall off! It’s a good little short comedy film, but no good unless you have watched the film previously. It could have been funnier, but this was Mike’s film, not Sulleys as Sulley is basically the main monster in the film. A good little addition to the DVD which will provide a few viewings!
For The Birds For the birds was shown at the cinema and a load of people loved it! It still amuses me. Again it’s a short comedy from Pixar, nothing to do with the theme of Monsters Inc, more about a load of little birds who don’t like a big bird, take the p*ss out of him and then the big bird get’s his revenge in his own little way. It only lasts about 3 minutes, but it really is quite excellent and so far I have watched it about 5 times, and never get bored!
Finding Nemo This is just a sneak peak, a trailer if you like at Disney’s up and coming film release. To be honest I don’t reckon it looks all that good, but I will give anything a try and as it’s Disney I’m sure it will go down real well at the box office.
Outtakes These are hilarious! The crew behind the film have taken a lot of time creating these outtakes, which provide endless laughs no matter how many times they are watched. They were shown in the cinema, at the end of the film, but you honestly can’t get enough of them. They are basically where the ‘actors’ have screwed up or something has gone wrong during the shooting of the films, however, remember this is an animation! There are no actors, but the crew have made it seem real to life by creating these scenes are they are truly wonderful. Take a look out for the shredder scene and take a look at the lanky guy’s face, it truly is a work of art! The best part of the DVD for me!
Boo’s door game Boo’s door game really is one for the kids, admittedly I’ve played it! This was for consumer research though of course! What it consists of is 6 doors, beneath these doors are a room and you have to find 1 piece of a door for every room you enter. All you do is move around to certain objects using your remote and click play, if there is a piece of door behind that object, you have to then move onto the next door, when you have all 6 pieces, the door is created……and erm, that’s it. You don’t get any rewards, apart from Mike’s voice congratulating you, so pointless really, though good for the little ones to play around with.
Other Stuff Apparently there are deleted scenes, but I haven’t seen these yet, so will have to take a look. Again these might have been made for the DVD itself, but are more likely to be actual deleted scenes.
There is a storyboard, which shows you the makings of Monsters Inc and the drawings used etc etc, this gets boring after about 3 slides!
Of course there is the usual scene selection and trailer, and that my people, is it.
SPECIFICATIONS
Onto the boring stuff, though useful for some.
Sound…………..Dolby Digital 5.1 Languages…………English, English hearing impaired, Italian, German, French, Spanish Full Frame Format (Wide screen I think is available)…….1.33.1 Dual Layer Format
It’s a good DVD that’s going to stick in my collection. With the film being so excellent, the DVD makes the perfect present, especially with the backup of the extra features, and the wicked Outtakes!
Recommended, it just wouldn’t be the same on VHS!
It retails from £13.99 on cd-wow upwards to about £24.99 in some shops (It's a scandal I tell ya!)

Ooh. I love this film. Saw it about four times. I thought Mike's New Car was a bit disappointing, but still fun.

Advantages: Everybody likes monsters inc, whether your an oap or a toddler it is suitable for the whole family. This film has alot of funny moments and has hidden jokes in for the older audience. Disadvantages: This film can drag on a little and it is east to predict what is going to happen next.
