...No way, this is for adults too y'know, and big kid's like me!
I’d never been to the cinema to watch an animated flick before, and I must admit, I didn’t really want to spend over a fiver on a cartoon, but I had heard a lot of good things about Monsters Inc, and something made me want to watch it. I couldn’t be bothered to wait for it to come out on video, so I decided to spend me money and go watch it in the cinema. That wasn’t helped by the fact that everywhere I seemed to go had the merchandise, the big cardboard cut outs of the monsters, and every film I had seen in the cinema recently had trailers for the movie!
So off I went, I’m glad I did too, as not only was it a great film, but it’s the first time I’ve sat through an entire animated film since The Lion King, I haven’t even watched Toy Story yet, however, I might now! I got into the cinema, sat down with me huge coke and watched the adverts, then the trailers, only to then be shown a short movie called ‘The Birds’. Hmmm I thought, another 5 minutes of boredom. I was surprised, what this short film actually has to do with the film monsters Inc itself is beyond me, but still, it’s one way to get the short film some publicity. However, the film just gets you ready for the main feature. ‘The Bird’s’ may only be a few minutes long, but it is surprisingly funny, even if a bit stupid and unnecessary. I hope they stick it on the DVD when it comes out as I would love to see it again! Anyway, back to the film.
This film has hit the big time. Loads have people have gone to see it, everyone knows about it. It’s got good reviews everywhere (and this one isn’t going to be any different!) and everyone knows the main 2 characters, even if it’s only by sight from bus shelters and the likes. This is again, an animated movie for both adults and children. There are some jokes in there that the adults would laugh at and the kids would still be laughing at another scene, it would go straight over their heads. It’s a bit like the Simpsons in that respect. So, onto my usual figures. The film has made…so far, get this…. $252.7m, £35.3m, SGD1,300,000 (that’s singapore folks, yes I got some new figures, cool eh) and HKD (yawn, hong kong) 18,580,000.
I haven’t got a clue about how great the last two figures are, but I do know that the first 2 figures are pretty huge! Not bad at all actually when the budget was $115m, they have made double that at just the cinemas in the US. That’s without DVD/Video rentals, purchases and merchandise. This is going to be one huge money spinner for Disney and Pixar.
Disney have employed a few big names in movie land to act as some of the voices as well. Take John Goodman for example who plays the voice of Sullivan and Steve Buscemi who plays the voice of Randall. They have all acted in movies, yet they are as good behind the scenes as they seem to be on the screens. They seem to have got the voices for the characters just right aswell. Randall (Steve Buscemi) has this evil voice, which, no offence to the poor chap, Steve Buscemi pulls off really well and Sullivan, the main character has a softer, but deeper voice. Very well thought out in my opinion.
--- Spoiler ---
Were introduced to the film by an opening animation, which is very much 2d, the kind of cartoon designs I used to get back in my day (that’s the 80’s) Very square graphics, and bland colours. Then were hit with the film, which is in glorious 3D, with lush colours. You’ll actually feel as if your watching a real film once you have got into it and not just an animation.
Monsters Inc is a power supply Company. We start the film with a monster having an interview for a job there. Monsters Inc supply power to metropolis, which is a city which all the monsters live in. The fuel for that power is human children’s screams. They way the system works is that the Monsters Inc factory has doors to children’s bedrooms all over the world. For seconds, it allows that door to be entered on the monsters side, for the monsters to walk into the child’s bedroom, scare the child, collect their screams in this little tank, walk back out of the room and then close the door. When the parents of the child look into the closet door, nothing is there but a closet. The link only works if the power on the door is activated. The monster that was having the interview isn’t good enough, that’s when were introduced the Sullivan, a green and purple hairy monster (you’ve seen him all over the adverts if you haven’t seen the film). He is the top ranking scarer, and collects the most screams, however, he has competition from Randall, who is close behind in the scream scoring department.
Each of the monsters who go to work, scaring children all over the world have a sidekick. It’s like a team buddy who controls the doors and collects the screams in their containers. Sullivan’s sidekick is the green, one eyed monster, Mike (Billy Crystal) who plays a huge part in this film. He helps Sullivan out, infact they appear to be best buddies, and what’s even better is that Mike can crack a joke or two!
So, Randall is trying his best to be the best monster, get the most screams, and beat Sullivan who has been the best monster for months. He begins to cheat, and work on the production floor when everybody else has left it to go home or to lunch. Only problem is, he has left one of the doors active, i.e. the children can walk into Montropolis and the monsters can walk into the children’s bedrooms, you know what’s going to happen don’t you, one of the children walk’s into Montropolis! I’m not going to give all of the film away, I would feel as if I was cheating you, so I will cut to the chase....
The monsters in Monsters Inc can die if they have contact with the children. I don’t know why, but that’s how it is. There is one scene where a monsters gets a sock stuck to his back, the CDA (Child Detection Agency) makes their way into the building, through the glass roof from helicopters, traps the monster, removes the sock in a surgical operation type way and then surrounds the monster and shaves all its hair off! It’s an hilarious scene actually! But anyway, if a child gets out, or touches a monster, it’s bad news.
Sullivan is the one who finds the child and all manor of things happen because of this playful child. Sullivan and Mike take the child and hide it away from the CDA, who will basically remove the child’s door back into the world as the child has already seen to much of Montropolis and the Monsters Inc factory. Sullivan doesn’t really want the child to get hurt, but at the same time, he doesn’t want to be the one who gets into trouble for having the child in his possession and hiding it from the CDA, and he also doesn’t want the child to come anywhere near him and harm him. So, he’s stuck in a situation really.
From here, it’s all fun and laughs and a real rollercoaster of a movie. The graphics in the movie are stunning to say the least. You think Shrek was good? It was, but they seem to have gone an extra mile with the CGI in Monsters Inc. Theres one scene where you see Sullivan, the Pink and Green hairy monster being hit with a snowball. You see the fur react to the impact of the snow and then as we swap to and from Sullivan, you can see the snow actually melting on his fur. Not only that, but it seems that in some scenes, every piece of fur on his body reacts to his surroundings. You see him upside down and his fur is like it should be etc etc. You also see his fur react to wind and much much more. But hey, it’s not all down to fur, it’s down to other characters, backgrounds etc and this is where the film really stands up on its own. The surroundings in the film are fabulous. The Monsters Inc factory really makes you feel as if they are in an actual factory and takes your mind away from realism into the world of Montropolis. The other characters in the film also have as much details as you would expect seeing Sullivan, no matter how long their part in the film is. What I really did like about the film is that it starts off with a 2D opening title animation with doors and green, 8 bit dragon rearranging letters. It’s the type of animation we would have seen back in 1980, when I was born infact. Then you are transformed into a wonderful world of CGI. Pure genius, and it just shows you what we can do with technology nowadays.
The soundtrack is also pretty good, however, produced by Randy Newman, this isn’t any ordinary soundtrack. As with a lot of animated films, they haven’t used songs that we can relate to, they have opted to make their own. I don’t mean they have sung their own songs, I just mean they have made their own music for the film. You can buy the soundtrack though, and having a flick through amazon, it’s be rated as 4/5 by about 1800 people who have bought it, so it can’t be bad, I just can’t justify spending my money on this type of music CD, but each to their own. I did like one of the songs performed, and they was ‘If I Didn’t have You’ performed by Billy Crystal and John Goodman. This was excellent stuff, especially when your watching the film.
So, to round up, this was an excellent film. It totally blew me away and even made me watch Shrek. It really has got me motivated to watch other animated films, and just the other day I was looking to buying Toy Story. I definitely want the DVD when Monsters Inc is available to buy, no matter how much it costs. It’s a film that really is worth spending that bit more money on, and really does want to be sitting proudly in your DVD/Video collection, although I would recommend you get it on DVD as it will look stunning.
If you haven’t seen it yet and you like animations, then stop wasting your time and get down to your local cinema to see it. If you haven’t really bothered with animated movies yet, a bit like I was, then try and get motivated to go see it, it really is worth the watch and is a barrel of laughs. I loved the end where they did some out takes. It made it so much more realistic, which the monsters acting like actors and making mistakes.
I've just got me the DVD too, and want to write an opinion on that, but alas, there is no category for it yet!
