I remember watching this year's Oscars and an ITV commentator remarked about how when roles, such as the role of Aileen, come available and less attractive actresses could get the chance to star, the casting agents behind the movie take a Hollywood beauty and make her ugly! They did it with Nicole Kidman in The Hours and now with Charlize Theron in Monster (coincedently, both actresses got the Oscar!)
Monster is a movie portrayal of the life and crimes of America's most famous female serial killer, Aileen Wuornos.
Working as a prostitute Aileen is attacked by one of her clients in his car in the middle of some woods. Battered, beaten and tied up Aileen manages to escape and get her revenge on her attacker - his life.
Aileen begins to justify killing men who pick her up because they are all disgusting and perverted and deserve to get what's coming to them.
Embarking on a lesbian relationship Aileen plans to kill just enough people so she and her girlfriend (Christina Ricci) can set up the life they dream of together.
I was eagerly awaiting this movie both because of Charlize's hyped performance and because of the small bits of fact I knew about the real life killer. Unfortunately the movie was a disappointment and the only thing that kept me watching was the knowledge it was based on fact and that I wanted to know the details of the true story.
Charlize Theron is excellent in the role but I couldn't help keep trying to see her real face underneath all her make-up! Unfortuantely I thought Christina Ricci was a little timid in the role as her lover, however, she may have represented the actual lover very well, but I have no frame of reference?
I suppose one good thing to take from the movie is that it is very real, which may explain why it is a bit slow? The director has maintained the dignity of the story without sensationalising the characters or events.
See this movie if you enjoyed movies such as 'Young Adam', but I would say to rent this movie as opposed to buying it.

Yeh from what i've heard its more worth watchin for Theron's performance rather than the film on the whole. Luke
