Advantages: Entertaining, one for a girls night in. Disadvantages: A bit soppy and a predictable ending.
I bought The Holiday on Play.com as it was part of their Christmas Cracker sale with not a whole lot of expectations. I'd seen trailers for it at the cinema, it seemed harmless and I like Kate Winslet so I thought I'd go for it. I must admit that I am glad that I did.
Now don't get me wrong, this is not a life-altering piece of cinematography that will have you soul-searching for days, but it is a little bit of romantic fun that is definitely one for a girls night in.
You are introduced to your two leading ladies; Iris, a quintessential English Rose who lives in a little cottage, works in a newspaper in London and oh yes, is hopelessly in love with her colleague Jasper who seems to like trampling on her heart. Then we have Amanda, a highly strung, highly successful movie trailer editor who lives in LA and is equally as unsuccessful ...
Advantages: Nice sweet film, romantic comedy Disadvantages: Not the best romantic comedy I have seen, some may find it too sickly sweet!
where she discovers Amanda.
They decide to take a break from their troubles and get away from the men in their lives so house swap for a couple of weeks over the Christmas period. Amanda swaps her luxurious modern house in California for Iris?s quaint little cottage in the English countryside.
Iris soon makes friends with Arthur a retired screen writer and sets about trying to help him. Her love interest comes in the form of Miles (Jack Black) a film composer who works with Amanda?s ex.
Amanda meanwhile meets Graham (Jude Law) who is Iris handsome brother and has an eye for the ladies. Will it be a holiday romance or will both these women find love when they least expect or want it?
***** My Thoughts *****
Having missed this at the cinema I was very keen to rent it to watch, certainly keener than my husband who did agree ...
Advantages: Lighthearted, good cast Disadvantages: Predictable
The Holiday is a chick flick type film although it is not quite your normal chick flick. It is based around the story of two girls , Amanda, played by Cameron Diaz and Iris played by Kate Winslet. Amanda is a film trailer producer who has just broke up with her boyfriend, she lives in LA. Iris lives in Surrey in a little cottage and is a writer for a paper. She is still in love with her ex boyfriend who she works with and has just found out he is getting engaged.
Amanda starts searching on the Internet for some sort of holiday to get away and try and forget what has happened. She stumbles across Iris's cottage on a website and contacts her about coming over to stay. Iris jumps at the chance after all the pain she has been put through. So the two girls decide to swap homes for the holidays.
Once swapped Amanda meets Iris's brother ...
Monsieur Hulot wreaks havoc in the staid resort of St. Marc-On-Sea, some of the most amusing gags ever seen.

DVD Description
Jacques Tati, master of his own idiosyncratic genre of cinematic slapstick, followed up his acclaimed debut JOUR DE F-TE with the equally ingenious MR. HULOT'S HOLIDAY. Five years in the making, the film marks the debut of Tati's altar ego, Mr. Hulot, a gangly and awkward Frenchman, perpetually the center and possible cause of a whirlwind of disasters, pratfalls, and mishaps. Tati's scrupulous attention to detail and almost arabesque sense of humor colors the entire film, from the departure of a gaggle of tourists from a malfunctioning train station to the minutiae of resort life. In place of a plot, a series of disastrous coincidences, surreal sight gags and irascible indignations erupt around Mr. Hulot as he gallantly and obliviously strolls through his seaside vacation. While he tries to impress a lovely ingenue, Hulot inadvertently barges in on a funeral, ignites a fireworks stand with his pipe, and topples a Ming vase, rarely realizing the extent of the damage he causes. Tati expertly crafts the visual bombast of traditional slapstick into a beautiful and intricate sequence of incidents, accompanied by an equally elegant and intriguing seaside soundtrack of lapping waves, laughing children and transistor radios, all merging into an absurd symphony of cinematic delight.
