Mr Monk works his way onto our screens in this first series as a beautifully unrefined obsessive compulsive detective who you know your going to get the joy to watch grow. While many people may feel bad laughing at what is essentially a debilitating psychological disease them people can rest assured that this show is not just about the fun.
It takes the serious side of the problems, helping monk through them, and at the same time his friends (who yes do make fun of him) stand by him and trust him. He is incredibly smart, something of a Sherlock Holmes or a more update reference, something of a Greggory House.
To grab your interest i will tell you of my personal favorite season one episode, Mr Monk meets Dale the Whale. Here a hugely obese man ( one so big he cannot fit through a door and is confined to his bed) is identified as killing a woman, with witnesses and even the victim crying out his name. Then enters our monk, who throughout a very personal episode (dealing with his wife Trudy) puts aside all his fears in order to convict the evil Dale. It is one of the more emotional episodes and i choose this one to point out because it has everything that is best in Monk in this episode. It is serious, it is funny, it is part of the larger ( loose) story ark. In the end the only way to judge is to see it yourself, but if you do make sure you watch with an open mind, in a comical mood and not one who may think this is simply bullying of a psychologically impaired figure ( when ironically he is far more psychologically developed then any of the other characters) watch for his quirkiness and best of all watch for Tony Shalloub's brilliant acting.
Advantages: Brilliant, Fascinating, TV Detective Show at its Best Disadvantages: Lack of Extra Features
...his wife, the one case Monk can't solve.
Aided by his private nursing assistant Sharona Fleming, played by "A League of Their Own" right fielder Bitty Schram, Monk uses his acute attention to detail and desire for everything to be in it's place to solve some baffling cases.
Shalhoub is at his best in this first season of Sherlock Holmes-esque collection of cases, guaranteed to keep in front of the TV in fear of missing that all important clue. ... ...the monologued recount at the end, to Columbo style reveals at the beginning resulting in a fascination as to how Monk, aided by his Dr Watson sidekick, will discover the fact to close the case.
This DVD boxset has taken pride of place in my collection, alongside the Season 2 Box and a gap for Season 3 released in February. If you enjoy the almost onmipotent arrogance of Conan-Doyle's 19th century detective, or the lateral thinking of Peter Falk's ...

Advantages: The first 4 (and arguably best out of the 6) seasons in one place. Disadvantages: Check sub-title availability. Could have done with more interviews.
Monk is a popular, funny and moving US detective series starring Tony Shalhoub (Wings, Paulie, Galaxy Quest, Men in Black) as character Adrian Monk, set in San Francisco and currently filming it's seventh season. It is based on a former detective who was released on discharge from the police force due to mental upset and is now a private investigator but hopes one day to be reinstated. Even though Adrian has always been plagued by phobias and compulsions, the cause of his breakdown was the tragic and violent death of his wife Trudy who was murdered in a car bomb and ever since Adrian has been trying to solve the case with slow and painful progress. She is ever present in his life (not in the style of Randall and Hopkirk) which is highlighted in heart tugging cameos that are either memories or dream/visions or when he is seen talking to ...
Advantages: Excellent stories Disadvantages: DVD's not packaged well
What can I say? The ultimate DVD box set for the wonderful Mr Monk.
The defective detective with OCD (obesesive compulsive disorder) is a joy to watch. Monk sees the tiniest of clues (like Columbo) but Monks obsessions and fears are added in.
I
n the first 3 series we see Monk with the wonderful (but unfashionable) Sherona Fleming as his assistant. We see Monk's foibles and the relationship he has with the Captain and Disher is not good.
As the series goes on we meet Natalie Teeger, who always keeps Monk in line.
Sherona is a strong independent woman but draws attention to herself. But the personal relationship with Monk is excellent (notice she calls him Adrian and not Mr Monk like Natalie does)
Tears well up in certain episodes when we see Adrians pain of losing Trudy his beloved wife. Always brings a smile to my face when I ...
Advantages: Funny, good actors Disadvantages: Storylines are sometimes a bit far fetched
Adrian Monk. After losing his wife in a car bomb accident he had a psycological breakdown resulting in a compulsive disorder needing to have everything perfect. He lost his job with the police but now is the best detective because of his illness as he can spot anything out of place in an instance. He is now a part-time detective working for the Captain. Monk now has to have an assistant with a constant supply of wipes for Adrian whenever he touches anything.
Tony Shalhoub plays the part of this strange man very well bringing in his sad disease to create a great comical effect. With Monks phobias of over 100 things including glaciers and milk this series is incredibly funny and a good change to your average midsommer murders or Touch of Frost.
This is not a cheesey detective show this is a hilarious series of incredibly clever ...
