Now if you've read my reviews on the first two Mission Impossible films then you will already know that I am a great fan of them and find the fact that the films tells an intelligent story very intriguing. As you can imagine therefore Mission Impossible 3 is also a member of my DVD collection and is a film that has an outing into my DVD player rather frequently.
***** BASIC DETAILS*****
Mission Impossible 3 was released in 2006 and has a film rating of 12. Tom Cruise plays the role he has in the previous two films and is aptly supported by Ving Rhames, Maggie Q, Michelle Monaghan and Jonathon Rhys Meyers (another reason why I was not going to miss this film).
*****THE PLOT*****
Now retired Hunt is preparing to marry his fiancée but is called back to participate in a rescue mission. How can he refuse when the girl in question is his former protégée Lindsey Farris who has been kidnapped by the evil dealer Owen Davian his deadliest adversary yet. When Hunt and his IMF team pull Lindsey from
the building in which she has been held captive they believe they are home and dry. That is until Lindsey complains of a powerful headache and seconds later is lying dead in the back of a helicopter after a bomb inserted in her head explodes.
Hunt is of course now on the warpath and after learning that Davian will be in the Vatican he and his team plan to abduct him but when the team are once again betrayed and Davian goes free the table are swiftly turned. Soon Ethan finds himself accepting Davian's proposal to steal a powerful weapon in Shanghai in return for the thing he loves the most - Julia.
Like its predecessors Mission Impossible 3 is a high octave, high-energy action movie jam packed with top-class action sequences. These range from powerful blasts to menacing gunfights and high-speed car chases and crashes. All of these are scripted and filmed to the highest of standards meaning that the final outcome is convincing and looks extremely authentic. As usual Cruise did a lot of his own stunts for this film and so again like in previous MI films the camera shots that can be achieved of these spectacular feats are exceptionally impressive.
*****SOUNDTRACK*****
A witty script and a sequence of high-energy action shots needs something to bind the two together and in Mission Impossible 3 it is the soundtrack that takes on this role. It is a blend of powerful and fast paced tracks and well as some more subtle pieces. Each however is perfectly placed for maximum effect and ensures that the film moves seamlessly from one scene to the next from one phase to another. It is of course the Mission Impossible theme tune however that is most memorable and certainly blows away the cobwebs when it appears.
*****ACTING*****
Now I'm quite a large Tom Cruise fan and in my opinion he is an actor that puts a great deal of himself into the roles that he plays. His role as Ethan Hunt is no exception and so like in the previous films he seems exceptionally comfortable in his role and so puts in a performance to be proud of. His charm and charisma as well as his intelligence and wit are a perfect antithesis for his sometimes ruthless manner and so ensure you are always on his side, running with him, fighting with him and even loving with him.
Michelle Monaghan also puts in a top performance as Julia and really allows us to see the sensitive side to Ethan's character. She plays her role with a great sense of conviction and strength. The performances of Ving Rhames, Maggie Q are also strong ones as is that of Jonathon Rhys Meyers who also adds a bit more eye-candy for the ladies to the mix.
*****MY THOUGHTS OVERALL*****
This film is certainly one I enjoy watching every time I see it. My main reason for this is the fact that the guns-a-blazing action sequences are carefully balanced with the web of intrigue and intelligent twists created by the script. To be perfectly honest I can't really criticise this film. I'm certain that there a probably a large number of goofs within it, sequences that probably just wouldn't happen, bullets that just shouldn't end up where they do and explosion that are far to large for the situation but none of these come to the fore-front when you are watching the film and personally that is all that matters to me. I know some of you out there would love to painstakingly analyse this film and criticise its ever mistake but to me it is simply a great piece of entertainment that does exactly what it says on the tin - gives non-stop thrills and blazing action.
