Six years after we last caught up with agent Ethan Hunt, he finds his way back onto the big screen for this big budget sequel. Having left behind his spy days in exchange for a more settled in house role as an FBI trainer, Ethan is now settling up for marital bliss with partner Julia Meade. However, when one of his trainees goes missing in action, Ethan is called upon to bring in dangerous arms dealer Owen Davian who is responsible for the death of the girl. Aided by three top agents, Ethan heads to the Vatican City where he comes face to face with Davian, but an attempt to arrest the dealer goes awry and Ethan finds himself, Julia and his career in danger. He must locate the mysterious object known only as Rabbit Foot to save himself and Julia and to put himself back on the right side of his peeved authorities.

After the long winded and overly confusing MI2, its nice to see Ethan and his team back on solid ground in this simple but effective yarn. JJ Abrams takes on directorial duties for this one, and with the debut of hit series "Lost" and episodes of "Alias" under his belt, its not hard to see why Paramount called upon him to fix the mess previously made by veteran action-hack John Woo. Its a fast paced action packed thrill-ride from the tense opening scenes, through the opening credits, to the sensational finale. Tom Cruise is on top form as Ethan Hunt, switching easily from action hero to vulnerable every-man desperate to save the woman he loves. Stealing the show though is Oscar winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, lending his credentials to a part that he could play in his sleep. Michelle Monaghan is no stranger to spy thrillers, having already starred in The Bourne Supremacy, but here she is sturdy as the love interest of Ethan Hunt. The rest of the cast are reliable, and a notable appearance by Laurence Fishburne fits in nicely with the theme of the film.

Its a steady script that delivers in terms of story, dialogue and even manages to get a few laughs on the screen. Abrams delivers the neccessary action sequences stylishly and at break-neck speed, but it never deviates away from the performances of the actors. There is also a fascinating insight into how the characters become another character whilst on the job. The soundtrack is quirky, and doesn't neccessarily call on current trendy bands to fill out the storyline, instead opting for existing well known songs to carry the story along. Watch out for a hilarious use of the "We Are Family" track to see what I mean. One thing about this film that lets it down is that there are no surprises. You kind of know what you're getting from the title, and you know early on from the story itself how its all going to turn out. But it is the third in the series, so perhaps a bit of predictability isn't the worst thing that could happen to it.

All in all, this is the best of the Mission Impossible films, proving that a sequel can be every bit as good as the original, and sometimes better than the films that predecess it. If they keep making the Missions like this, then I'll be happy to keep going to the cinema to see them.

Having purchased only the single disc edition of the film, I couldn't possibly comment on the quality of the 2 disc format. However, with a making of documentary, some commentary's, and a few deleted scenes, its clear to see that even on the single disc edition, Paramount have gone out of their way to make this a big name quality release. The extra's that I did get to see on the one disc edition are informative, insightful and easy to follow. The commentary is a touch bland, with Cruise and Abrams wittering away aimlessly. The directors description of the casting of Simon Pegg in his minimal role is hilariously funny though, and also his description of Pegg's improvisation in his big scene.

If you're a fan of action films, you'll be kept on your toes with this one. And if you're a film fan, then its still an entertaining way to kill 90 minutes in the afternoon.

You can buy this DVD from many good retailers, such as www.hmv.co.uk, www.amazon.co.uk, www.play.com, and www.virginmega.co.uk
