Mission: Impossible 3.
The movie star that guarantees global box office success has teamed up with the director who is now known to create small screen phenomena. Yes Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, aka Tom Cruise, has joined forces with Jeffrey Jacob Abrams, (better known as J.J. Abrams) creator of Alias and Lost, for the third installment of the multi-million dollar franchise. Question is, will Abrams make the transition from TV to movies or will he fall flat on his face and do to M.I: III what Joel Schumacher did to Batman?
Ethan Hunt, at his engagement party has seemed to finally put his secret agent past behind him. He has a beautiful new lady who goes by the name of Julia (Michelle Monaghan) and is living life to the full. However a phone call from his IMF agency ignites the flickering flame of curiosity for Hunt. After receiving what seems to be the possible mission, Ethan realises that it's in his blood and has to serve his country one last time!!! From here on in he has to deal with relationship issues,
rescue missions, infiltrating and investigating probable moles, staying alive, insubordination, oh yeah, and fighting the bad guy who is possibly his biggest and most dangerous test yet. All in a days work for a super-spy!!!!!
J.J.Abrams, who has written screenplays for movies such as Roadkill and Armageddon, demonstrates on his directorial feature film debut, that he has made the transition and leap from TV to the Silver Screen as well as being able to handle the intense of the responsibility of a massive franchise. In fact, he does this with such fantastic ease! What has helped however is that the script was penned by Abrams himself, giving him license to take the characters in any direction he pleases and to places they have never been before. So our fortunate friend J.J. could do whatever he wanted with the backing of Cruise, who himself is one of the producers of this movie! Not bad for a debutant.
Abrams approach and script brings a humanistic element to the characters instead of the singular dimension they possessed previously, as well some humour (some tongue-in-cheek, others not intentional). He also gets the best out of all his performers. Cruise is just… Cruise. Consistent, action man extraordinaire, he is as always, pure class. Ving Rhames (Stickell) as support is humorous and more than competent showing why Cruise and Abrams must obviously trust him. Laurence Fishburne (Brassel) is also funny but with his twist of cynicism and sarcasm, brings an extra presence to the screen thus allowing for improved character interaction. Our own Simon "Shaun of the Dead" Pegg as bumbling but quirky Benji Dunn is amusing and entertaining especially as he seems to be in La-La land sharing screen time with Tom Cruise - let's face it though… who wouldn't. However as good as Cruise and Fishburne are, they do not come even close to the majestic performance of Philip Seymour Hoffman, who as Owen Davian is genuinely frightening, menacing and intimidating. Every threatening word he utters...you believe. He is simply one of the best baddies to have exercised his authority, power and influence on our screens in recent years. No Carey style overacting, no Depp-esque campness, just sheer genius by an actor approaching the very peak of his abilities, in a word… brilliant.
M:I III nearly has it all for an action movie. Great stunts, high-quality acting, humour, a mass of gadgets that Q would go green with envy, a great script, fantastic set-pieces and of course highly ridiculous far fetched scenarios. The only thing this movie suffers from is that Hoffman does not have enough screen time, which is unfortunate because to re-iterate using another four words, he is absolutely magnificent.
After De Palma's extraordinarily surprisingly average first film and Woo's disappointing sorry sequel featuring Cruise with dodgy hair (what the hell was all that about?!!), M:I III is easily the best of the franchise and will definitely raise the bar for any wannabe's directing espionage/action movies. While in some places it is bloody ridiculous, there's no doubting Mission: Impossible III is entertaining, great escapism and a cracking watch. Sure there are scenes reminiscent of True Lies, The Matrix, but unlike those and many more there are no religious sub-texts or hidden deep meanings, it's just… all about the action. Abrams has proved that there is no way in the world that with this effort, he'll do a Schumacher and wreck the franchise. If anything he has improved on it.

A quality review. Concise, articulate and pretty much spot on in it's analysis. Cruise is Cruise, Hoffman steals the show and this is quite literally the best fun at the cinema since last years Ong-Bak. However, De Palma's original is still the best of the MI's so far (the less said about Woo's interpretation the better!) alboy
