Based on the 1960's espionage TV series of the same name, the series of films have taken the story of Mission Impossible to a whole new level and an entire new audience. The original film ensured that a change of leadership from Jim Phelps to Ethan Hunt was taken and managed to hand the baton over to the next generation, the second being an all action yawn fest that was directed by John Woo with far too much slow motion and errors in continuity. However the third part of the Mission Impossible series proved to be the most controversial film of Tom Cruise's career so far.
As soon as the film starts you know that a completely different approach to the story telling has been applied. Ethan Hunt is now involved in training rather than field work and has found the time to settle down and plans to take early retirement. The story starts at his engagement party; here he receives the obligatory phone call asking him to return to service as he is needed for a mission in Berlin. Hunt has a dilemma on his hands, he has told his fiancée a cover story and she doesn't know the truth in what he does for the Government. At short notice, he goes and takes part in a rescue mission that results in the hostage being killed by a tint charge inside her brain. From here things open up and Hunt has no choice but to accept the mission to discover what actually happened, from here the Impossible Mission Force uncover.... No, will not spoil it. What I thought was clever was the place where the film begins. The opening scene begins where you see Hunt in quite a serious situation and you have no idea as to what is happening at all. The movie does effectively explain this in its entirety as to how the situation came to be.
Never has the Mission Impossible Theme sounded so good over the opening credits.
Cruise returns for the third time to play Agent Ethan Hunt. For a change you get to see him relax, and this is somewhat new for the character considering what he actually went through I the first two films. The actor hasn't lost the edge playing the lead role at all, yet in some scenes does tend to look a little older than others, unsure if this was because it was badly lit or what. Other that that Cruise gives a solid performance, and in this film you do tend to see him going through the emotions more than most films that Cruise appears in.
Phillip Seymour - Hoffman plays Owen Davian, we see him at the beginning of the film when Hunt is in the situation that we know nothing about. His part does open up as the film goes on, originally I suspected that the role he plays would be little more than a cameo appearance, but was surprised at just how much input he actually gave into the story. This actor delivers what is wanted for the film and then some as his role is an arms dealer; he looks the part and signifies his intentions quite clearly in his mannerisms. Davian is a man who uses the information of an individual against them as a means of winning.
Michelle Monaghan plays Hunt's fiancée. The actress has appeared in numerous other films such as Mr and Mrs Smith and more recently has just completed filming her part in the upcoming Eagle Eye. I liked her approach to the role and the way in which she has the necessary screen chemistry with Cruise.
Completing Hunt's IMF Team are Maggie Q, Ving Rhames, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers who ably assist Hunt throughout the film. Rhames playing Luthor is the only actor, along with Cruise, who has been in all three films. The Head of IMF is played by Lawrence Fishburne, who brings a vast narrow mindedness to the part of Theodore Brassel. I thought that he was perfectly cast in the role as he has that superior presence on screen as well as a commanding voice that tends to get him noticed in a confrontational piece of dialogue.
What is fresh about this film is that Abrams has taken the opportunity to open up the relatively little known back end operation of the IMF, and in the film we get to see the office and personnel of the people who work there. This was never done in the TV series at all and this has bought an effective way of actually grounding the whole premise in reality. This is also where we get to see Simon Pegg, he plays Benji, an analyst who Hunt turns to in times of need. Good use of Pegg's comedic timing as he is utilised at just the right point in the film, which allows the film to slow down in pace just enough to get the tension building up nicely. Locations in the film are used wisely and not sold to the audience as a holiday destination, places such as Berlin, Rome and Shanghai are the main locations used for specific reasons to the plot in which the story utilises these locations in a number of sequences that are well planned and excellently executed.
Interestingly you can tell that this is a JJ Abrams feature as he has subtly placed a number of actors from other series that he has been involved in, the biggest one being Greg Grunberg who plays a prominent part in Heroes.
Overall this is a very good film, but controversially it will always be remembered for Tom Cruise's antics on Oprah when he jumped from the sofa telling people how happy he was to be in love with Katie Holmes. This was a clip that was shown worldwide and turned a lot of people away from seeing the film, in interviews about Mission Impossible III he was attempting to sell the film as well as tell people about his personal life which in some rule books was actually mixing business and pleasure.
In the end Paramount terminated their contract with Cruise citing poor box office receipts when it opened. Which when a film that cost £150 million to make and didn't make a fair return then you have to ask the question as to..... why? In this case it was the image of Tom Cruise that was tarnishing the product by what he was saying and doing, which in turn tarnished the actor and his popularity as a box Office draw. Something that is still being held against him today.
For me personally, I really enjoyed this film for a number of reasons. The tension is upheld in a number of action sequences, which are extremely slick, well executed and do manage to entertain in a way that is original and fresh to the audience who would have easily feel asleep watching Mission Impossible II. I suspect that Abrams used this as template in what he shouldn't do when making a film as this is not only better but also more fun than the its prequel. I also feel that the cast have the right amount of equal screen time exposure as well and this is good, as it lets the characters evolve that little bit more and is really down to a well written script.
Director JJ Abrams has done a good job with the story and the entire Direction of the film itself. He has added a level to the film that compared to the other two is fresh and has opened up a number of opportunities should a Mission Impossible IV be filmed. Hunt has moved on in his life now and has more commitments outside the job than in and so this can add different elements to that add to the story. It will be interesting to see what Abram's new Start Trek movie (with Simon Pegg as Scotty) will be like as from the trailer it seems that he has applied the same logic to that franchise that he applied to this. Naturally he has borrowed from other series he has been involved in as it is easily noticeable, but they are things that worked then and do now. Bottom line is that this is a great Saturday night movie that should be watched because it's a pure entertainment rollercoaster that will have you hooked to the final scene. I hope that a follow up is made with Abrams at the helm, but I suspect that his commitments will be concentrated on a follow up to Star Trek.
Advantages: Good Action, Mainly Good Acting, Exciting, Tense Disadvantages: Cruise = Dull
Ethan Hunt has quit the life of a grand master espionage agent. He wants a normal life and had built up a relationship with the stunning and intelligent Julia, they are together and he trains prospective agents away from the danger and pain of a life as an undercover agent. When one of his recruits is trapped in combat and being tortured for information he is forced to jump back into the murky world of an international spy. When his home life is ... ...has to face up to his responsibilities and go after the super villain Owen Davian. But as the stakes get increasingly higher, the CIA after him and his whole happiness on the line will he ever be able to restore some normaility into his life? I walked into Mission Impossible 3 with dwindling expectations. The original was a fun piece of escapism, but hardly worthy of a sequel and much less a third in the already over tired action genre. Fortunately ...

Advantages: JJ Abrams, Tom Cruise, Philip Seymour Hoffman. better than the M:I II Disadvantages: Ridiculous in parts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mission: Impossible 3.
The movie star that guarantees global box office success has teamed up with the director who is now known to create small screen phenomena. Yes Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, aka Tom Cruise, has joined forces with Jeffrey Jacob Abrams, (better known as J.J. Abrams) creator of Alias and Lost, for the third installment of the multi-million dollar franchise. Question is, will Abrams make the transition from TV to movies or will he ... ...bloody ridiculous, there's no doubting Mission: Impossible III is entertaining, great escapism and a cracking watch. Sure there are scenes reminiscent of True Lies, The Matrix, but unlike those and many more there are no religious sub-texts or hidden deep meanings, it's just… all about the action. Abrams has proved that there is no way in the world that with this effort, he'll do a Schumacher and wreck the franchise. If anything he has improved on ...

It has been 6 years since Tom Cruise last graced our screens as Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible 2. Now if you've read my reviews on the first two Mission Impossible films then you will already know that I am a great fan of them and find the fact that the films tells an intelligent story very intriguing. Advantages: clever action sequences Disadvantages: They had to blow up such a nice car.
...(2000) the sequel was produced. Mission: Impossible II was directed by John Woo and featured Tom Cruise as its leading man. This movie however, was not much like the t.v. show or like the first MI. It was more like a bootleg version of a bond film. Going for style and lacking all substance, it was as average as action movies get. Now about six years later, we have the third part in this story. MI3 is directed by J.J. Abrams famous for contributing ... ...also helped pen a movie I fairly enjoyed called "Joyride". In Mission Impossible 3, we find supa'spy Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) as a retired IMF field leader. He is far from active duty and enjoying it. He is now training new IMF agents to become supa' spies like he once was. In a change of events, he is suddenly ripped away from the family life that he had just began to enjoy, to be confronted with a international weapons dealer that has a reputation ...

...This review is on the 2006, trilogy, MissionImpossible3 starring Tom Cruise, as IFM agent Ethan Hunt. Now I was a really big fan of the first missionimpossible, and then kind of let down by the second one, however again like the first one I liked the final instalment, because it was so much different in terms of storyline, style, action scenes and so on.
The film was directed by JJ Abrams, who most people may no from such film as Cloverfeild, and TV shows such as Alias and Lost. He's a brilliant director, he does some of the most intense action sequences, and it pulls of really well.
For people whom haven't seen the missionimpossible film, the main background plot is that Ethan Hunt works for a special government agency known as the IMF, ImpossibleMission Force, who is like a MI6 type organization. There goals are to stop all...

Advantages: Best in series, Fun, Thrilling Disadvantages: Over the top
...After the complete flop of MissionImpossible 2, I was rather reluctant to go out to the cinema and watch what I thought would be another terrible film. However, I was proved wrong, so wrong, in fact, that I had to buy the 2 disc DVD as soon as it was released.
J.J. Abrams has made a successful entry into Hollywood movie directing by revitalising a series which a lot of people thought had failed miserably. He creates this film with the usual glossy cast, but this time, the star-studded credits list is accompanied by an engrossing, thrilling plot.
Ethan Hunt, played by Tom Cruise, is on a mission to rescue a captured IMF agent from a renowned arms dealer, Owen Davian. During his mission, he finds that Davian's next target is Hunt's wife Julia. The mission now personal, Hunt embarks on a thrilling, explosive mission, including...

J.J. Abrams, creator of small-screen hits ALIAS and LOST, makes his feature film debut with the third installment of this successful series based on the hit 1960s television show. Secret Agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) has decided to take it easy and lead a somewhat normal life. He's even found his perfect woman, Julia (Michelle Monaghan), and is engaged. But when newbie agent Lindsey Farris (Keri Russell)--whom Hunt mentored--goes missing while on assignment, the reluctant agent finds himself back in business. Soon, with his old buddy Luther (Ving Rhames) in tow, along with team members Zhen (Maggie Q) and Declan (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), Hunt is traversing the globe on the trail of Farris's captor, Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman), an elusive international weapons dealer. The stakes increase when the villainous Davian gets a hold of Hunt's fiancee and uses her as a bargaining chip. A raucous combination of spectacular chases, explosions, amazing stunts, and elaborate schemes takes the Impossible Mission Force (IMF) team to Berlin, the Vatican, and Shanghai. With fascinating hi-tech tools these secret agents can impersonate virtually anyone, scale walls in an instant, infiltrate the tightest security system, and blow up the evidence when they're done. But facing their most formidable foe ever, Hunt and his fellow agents are fighting the clock to keep Julia alive and get Davian the mysterious weapon he is demanding. Cruise's personal involvement in the stunts lends a nice air of authenticity to Hunt, who also shows his emotional side in this outing as he juggles his secret life and his new love, as well as possible betrayal by someone inside the IMF. Laurence Fishburne also stars as IMF's Director Brassel, and Billy Crudup appears as his somewhat timid right-hand man, Musgrave.
