The movie is a remake of the 1947 movie of the same name starring Maureen O'Hara, Edmund Gwenn and a young Natalie Wood. Now that movie is worth a review of its very own so I won't go on about it here. I'll only say that although the 1947 version is a classic, this 1994 remake gives it a good run for its money!
At its heart, the movie is a challenge to the consumer-led world of today to keep the faith in something that is not driven by the almighty dollar, pound, yen etc etc - in this case, Santa Claus and this is shown through the eyes of Susan Walker (Mara Wilson), a six-year-old living with her mother in New York. Susan's mum, Dorey (Elizabeth Perkins) works for Cole's department store and organises their Thanksgiving Day Parade. Through this, she meets Kris Kringle (Sir Richard Attenborough) who she hires as Santa Claus in the parade and also to be the Cole's Santa Claus in the store. Dorey is a little wary of Kris Kringle as he is adamant that he truly is Santa Claus - he even has his own suit - whereas she believes (and has taught Susan to believe) that Santa Claus is a myth. Kris is then challenged to use Dorey and Susan as a test case - if he can make them believe in Santa Claus, the surely there is hope for the world and for Santa Claus.
This central theme is then supplemented with Bryan Bedford (Dylan McDermott), Dorey's neighbour who has fallen in love with her. He is a Santa Claus believer and believes in taking leaps of faith - something which Dorey has not been able to do.
As the story progresses, we find out that Victor Landbergh, the owner of Cole's competitors is trying to shut down and buy out Cole's and when Kris Kringle becomes New York's favourite Santa Claus, by putting parents and children ahead of profits (and saving Cole's from closure in the process), Landbergh decides to frame Kris as a madman. This plot line sets up one of the best courtroom debates ever committed to film, when Bryan Bedford and Kris Kringle set out to prove that Santa Claus does, indeed, exist.
While this has been going on, the audience has also shared in Susan's dilemma over whether to believe her mother, or believe in Santa Claus as Kris and Bryan do, so she asks Kris for a gift that no-one, not even her mother knows she wants - a dad, a house and a baby brother - reasoning that if she gets it then she will know that Santa Claus really does exist. Will she get her wish? Well, it would be spoiling it to tell you, so I won't…
Movie remakes do come in for a lot of stick in terms of Hollywood running out of ideas and ruining things etc etc, but I think this one has really done a good job of bringing the story up to date in an increasingly consumer age and reminds the audience that sometimes simple acts of faith are what is important. The message is as clear now as it was in the 1940's and it is equally relevant.
The movie itself is quite charming, with good performances from all, from those starring to the small, but memorable character parts played by Joss Ackland (Victor Landbergh), for example. It is a brilliant film to watch on a cold evening because it is quite cosy and so inoffensive that I don't think you can help but like it (OK, not necessarily a film for the gents among us!).
Overall I recommend the film, it's not high-art, but it is a good re-working of a classic film with some great performances and wholesome message. I'll get the sick bucket now!

This review concentrates on the movie as the DVD does not really have any features on it. I believe there is a trailer, but nothing more, so hence the cheap price of the DVD.
The movie is available on DVD from most online and offline retailers from around £5.99.

...Christmas spirit, so we rented Miracle on 34th Street, a Christmas film that I’d never actually got round to watching before, but had heard lots of good things about. == Synopsis == Cole’s department store is in trouble, it has just warded off one attempted buy out, but the claws are out from their opposition, and they’re determined to do whatever they can to own that shop. At the same time as the news of the failed buy out hits the papers, Dorey ... ...for Doris, her Santa is a drunk and as far from the image of Santa as you could get. But as luck would have it, an old man who goes by the name of Kriss Kringle just happens to be passing, and bare and uncanny resemblance to Santa, Doris randomly approaches him in the middle of the park as he’s leaving the parade area, and offers him the job, which he accepts. Kriss makes a good impression at the store, and on Dorey’s daughter Sarah, although Doris ...

...can feel like that again. Miracle on 34th street renews your faith in the true spirit of christmas and the magic that can happen then.
The modern version, taken from the 1940s classic, developes the story into a modern setting with ease. You are made to feel a part of it and by the end you too are wishing that he will be found to be Santa Clause.
The merry story is added by brilliant performences, none more so than by the most important character, ... ...His talent shines as always.
This film is ideal not only for christmas but any time someone is down as it restores your faith in human kind.
Most of all kids at christmas will love it as Santa wins overall, over the nasty ones who don't believe in him, a must see. ...

Six-year-old Susan (Mara Wilson) has doubts about childhood's most enduring miracle - Santa Claus. Her mother told her the "secret" about Santa a long time ago, so Susan doesn't expect to receive the most important gifts on her Christmas list.
But after meeting a department store Santa (Kris kringle) who's convinced he's the real thing, Susan is given the most precious gift of all, something to believe ... ...you really believe.
A great film for an afternoon in the warm with the children.
I first saw this film at the pictures, taking my young brother and sister's and loved it, mind you I have to say after seeing the original its not as good. I now own it on Dvd £9.99 at Tesco.
Its christmas colourful and a vibrant film and the actual story line of child not believing in santa is good and watch able, but when they bring in the romantic man meets woman ...

Advantages: Fills your heart with slightly sycophantic warmth Disadvantages: Michael Caine sings
"- UNEMPLOYED!" Instantly the rats are wearing Hawaiian hula skirts and they shout "heat wave!" as if the sun was shining.
The film is pocketed with amusing scenes like this and the whole story is held together by The Great Gonzo, acting as the Narrator, who guides us through the movie with the assistance of his sidekick, Rizo The Rat. The couple help fill in the gaps and keep you entertained through the lulls in the film.
Whatever your thoughts on the Muppets and Michael Caine's singing ability, The Muppet Christmas Carol is a must for your Christmas DVD collection, alongside The Santa Clause and Miracle On 34thStreet. It's not the greatest film of all time, but it's a great one to watch at Christmas time. ...
