changes in this family-oriented remake. Thescreenplay by the prolific John Hughes sticks close to the originaloutline, centering on Macy's executive Dorey Walker (ElizabethPerkins) and her young daughter Susan (Mara Wilson), neither ofwhom much believes in the spirit of Christmas. Dorey is in chargeof hiring Macy's Santas, including an old man named Kriss Kringle(Richard Attenborough). He does a remarkably convincing job, and hesoon reveals that he actually believes himself to be Santa Claus. The authorities threaten to place the old man in an insane asylum, but a young lawyer comes to his defense. Meanwhile, Dorey and Susanfind their own defenses melting and become reacquainted with thepower of faith. Hughes and director Les Mayfield add a few moderntouches, making Susan slightly more cynical and adding therequisite soulless corporate villains. Viewers familiar with theoriginal may still prefer Edmund Gwenn's original Kris Kringle andconsider the remake unnecessary, although the newer versionreflects enough of the earlier film's spirit to prove entertainingto modern family audiences.
Advantages: Enteraining , Good acting Disadvantages: None!
' when she was younger. However , why will a visit to a department store change her views ? Watch Miracle on 34thStreet to find out.
I love this movie. It's my favourite all time Christmas movie! It's just perfect. I like how in a way Susan portrays adults , who don't believe in father Christmas , and at the end of the movie everyone believes in Santa Claus. It's a magical film , which is extra special when watched on Christmas Eve! I love the Christmassy feeling you get when watching this movie. It's definitely a feel good movie.
I couldn't believe how good an actress Mara Wilson who plays Susan in this movie is. She's so mature and it's hard to believe that she was only six or seven when this movie was filmed.
I like the message in the film : if you believe in something so much , it will happen.
My favourite character in this ...
Advantages: Great Christmas movie and quite charming Disadvantages: None really
I recently bought 'Miracle of 34thStreet' on DVD after catching it on Sky over the Christmas period - the main reason being that having caught the end of it I was reminded of what a lovely movie it is and also that although it is a Christmas film, it really is watchable at any time of the year.
The movie is a remake of the 1947 movie of the same name starring Maureen O'Hara, Edmund Gwenn and a young Natalie Wood. Now that movie is worth a review of its very own so I won't go on about it here. I'll only say that although the 1947 version is a classic, this 1994 remake gives it a good run for its money!
At its heart, the movie is a challenge to the consumer-led world of today to keep the faith in something that is not driven by the almighty dollar, pound, yen etc etc - in this case, Santa Claus and this is shown through the eyes ...
Advantages: None Disadvantages: Enough to put you off Christmas for life
