While Steven Spielberg's sci-fi detective thrillerMinority Reportrevolves around the ... more
intriguing premise of future cops arresting
criminalsbeforetheir crimes, beneath its hi-tech
veneer it begs a simple but infinitely powerful
question: do we have the power to alter our own
destiny? Coming on the heels of the director's
posthumous collaboration with Stanley
Kubrick,A.I., it also affords long-time Spielberg
musical collaborator John Williams a rare
back-to-back opportunity to construct a musical
future-world. The composer's efforts here are
largely a forceful departure fromA.I.'s sparkling
minimalist influences, employing an enduring
cinematic cliché--that film future's often sound
much like the works of early-20th-century
modernist classical composers--that puts a
compelling new spin on the ever slippery concept
of post-modernism. If the cues here occasionally
recall the jagged edges, dark corners and rhythmic
fury of some of Jerry Goldsmith's best sci-fi
scores, it's only a tribute to both legends' deep
musical roots and preternatural scoring instincts.
But make no mistake, this is pure Williams at his
most compelling, employing his full arsenal of
technique and always masterful use of colour to
construct a new genre--call it "future noir"--from
inspirations as diverse as Bartók, Ligeti,
Penderecki, Webern and Schoenberg. Like Herrmann's
suspenseful scores for Hitchcock (one of the
film's intentional musical touchstones) there may
be nary a memorable melody in it, but it's a
riveting--and occasionally harrowing--listen from
opening bars to its final, minimalist-tinged
string flourishes.--Jerry McCulley

Ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun!
Review of Minority Report (Wide Screen) by feniak

Advantages: Plot, performances, action scenes
Disadvantages: Some in-cohesive parts

...Tom Cruise, Philip Dick => Minority Report. This is very good team giving us a great movie. Having had a bad experience with ‘The Impostor’ which Philip dick wrote, I wasn’t very sure about this film before I started watching it. The calendar states 2054 and in Washington suburbs there is an operation taking place by Pre-Crime Division. This was created after the discovery of a method where are future crimes are forecasted. With this method, ‘criminals’ ...

Cruise + Spielberg = Summer Blockbuster?
Review of Minority Report (Wide Screen) by ukedge87

Advantages: Superbly written with tremondous depth.
Disadvantages: Failure at the box office. Over complicated?

Minority Report Review Cruise and Spielberg. Those two names alone will make a movie buff’s heart skip a beat and stomach fill with butterflies when the word summer block buster is added to the sentence, and yet in 2002 when the duo released their predicted hit the box office did nothing but fizzle. Spielberg had just come off another huge disappointment with the title of AI, but was still reeling in the success of Saving Private Ryan from 1999. ...
...The musical score in Minority Reports, as most Spielberg movies, relies on brilliant classical orchestras, and even though the “old fashioned” music is not contemporary it compliments the futuristic context perfectly, creating the tense and superficial feeling the film longs for. The musical score is justified by the brilliant directing that you come to expect from the master of film, Steven Spielberg, who takes command of the flick. The great camera ... Read review

Always keep running.
Review of Minority Report (Wide Screen) by drewboy

Advantages: Plot, acting, special effects
Disadvantages: Advertising, DVD features a bit boring.

It’s just a normal day at the office for John Anderton when out of the blue, the pre-cons have a vision about a murder of passion about to be committed somewhere in the Washington area. As these crimes are not pre-meditated, this leaves the Pre-Crime police force, and John himself, little time to sort through the images given to them from the pre-cog trio and get to the scene to stop the murder from happenening. Thankfully, the experience of John ...
...identical row of houses, allows him to save the adulterous wife and her lover from a distraught man who has just found out about it. So, after a hard day at the office, John returns home. However it is very clear that he is a far from happy man, reliving past memories of his son and his wife through the 3D imaging system he has, and getting away from it all by illegally ‘doping’. The next day, on arrival at the Pre Crime offices, John is greeted ... Read review

Dick has something of a cult status, and has had several of his futuristic, paranoid, conspiracy driven stories realised in the form of films, notably Blade Runner and Total Recall. However, the screenwriters have done a great job of turning ... Read review

It wasn't me!!!!
Review of Minority Report (Wide Screen) by  earlofaldgate

Advantages: action blockbuster
Disadvantages: time travel style paradox

...I was told a year ago that i would write this review so here goes - Padded out from a Philip I. Dick short story, Minority Report tells the story of the head of pre-cognitive crime division John Anderton who is accused of a crime he hasn't yet committed. Set in Washington in the year 2054, 3 genetically altered humans can see into the future and give the pre-crime police details of crimes that will soon be committed. If just one of the 'precogs' sees a different outcome it is filed as a 'minority report'. But the time-travel style conundrum is : If someone is arrested before he commits a murder, can the person be accused of the murder, which, because they have been arrested already can never take place? The prisons are likely to fill up quickly with this style of justice and the system, which is trialling well in Washington... Read review

DVD Description

The science-fiction thriller MINORITY REPORT, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise, is based on a short story by renowned writer Philip K. Dick. In the year 2054, in Washington, D.C., murder has been eliminated thanks to Precrime, a program that uses the visions of three psychics, called Precogs (an abbreviation for precognitive thinkers), to arrest and imprison would-be murderers before they have a chance to kill. Tom Cruise plays John Anderton, a Precrime enforcer who believes in the system for his own personal reasons--years back his young son was abducted, and he has dealt with the loss by becoming a high-strung Precrime officer. The director of Precrime (Max von Sydow) is eager to take the program national, and feels threatened by an ambitious federal agent (Colin Farrell) who is bent on finding a flaw in the system. When Anderton finds himself accused of the future murder of a man he's never met, his faith in Precrime is instantly shaken. He goes on the run, and is trailed by the relentless Precrime police. In the tradition of BLADE RUNNER (also based on a Dick story), MINORITY REPORT is a dark, brooding vision of the future. Spielberg expertly mixes thrilling chase and suspense sequences (the best of which involves Anderton being pursued by eye-scanning mechanical spiders) and stunning special effects with a challenging look at society's willingness to sacrifice privacy and the notion of free will for convenience and security. MINORITY REPORT is a thought-provoking and exciting film that ranks with Spielberg's best.
