I was told a year ago that i would write this review so here goes -
Padded out from a Philip I. Dick short story, Minority Report tells the story of the head of pre-cognitive crime division John Anderton who is accused of a crime he hasn't yet committed. Set in Washington in the year 2054, 3 genetically altered humans can see into the future and give the pre-crime police details of crimes that will soon be committed. If just one of the 'precogs' sees a different outcome it is filed as a 'minority report'.
But the time-travel style conundrum is : If someone is arrested before he commits a murder, can the person be accused of the murder, which, because they have been arrested already can never take place? The prisons are likely to fill up quickly with this style of justice and the system, which is trialling well in Washington is beginning to receive opposition.
Anderton, played reasonably well by Cruise, is a big fan of the system, throwing himself into his work to get over the death of his son 6 years earlier, until his name comes up as a murderer (to be). The pace speeds up as he has 36 hours to solve the puzzle and save himself from his own system(metal spiders that scan eyes!!! urgh), dodging his own police force and saving they day (as he usually does, but this time without a pair of sunglasses)
When Anderton reaches the point where he is supposed to commit murder I truly believed the film was over and it was going to have a YOOHOO, as I call them (UHUE - uncommon in Hollywood unhappy ending) but we had only reached the paradox part of the film, or plot hole if that's what you want to call it, in a similar vein to Donnie Darko or the Oracle scene in the Matrix. Now the film turns into more of a conspiracy theory as Anderson tries to figure out who is setting him up & why by kidnapping one of the 3 precogs and unravelling another 'minority report' that had been ignored until then.
Max von Sydow gives a great performance,as usual & Spielberg makes another great adaptation of Dicks work. Its not overly sci-fi, like total recall or blade runner, so it should appeal to a wider audience. The underlying theme of the film is about controlling free will at the expense of security, relevant today with the introduction of eye scans at airports, identity theft & increased controls around the world in the face of terrorism. Not just a no-brainer action movie but easy enough to watch as one if you don't want to think about it too much also.
