Dick began writing novels prolifically and his short story output lessened. The title story of this collection has been made into the Steven Spielberg-directed movie of the same name while "The Days of Perky Pat" inspired one of Dick's greatest works the novel The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch; The Penultimate Truth grew from "The Mold of Yancy". Philip K. Dick is shown at his incomparable prime in this fourth volume of the definitive collection of short fiction.

I was told a year ago that i would write this review so here goes -
Padded out from a Philip I. Dick short story, Minority Report tells the story of the head of pre-cognitive crime division John Anderton who is accused of a crime he hasn't yet committed. Set in Washington in the year 2054, 3 genetically altered humans can see into the future and give the pre-crime police details of crimes that will soon be committed. If just one of the 'precogs' sees a different outcome it is filed as a 'minority report'.
But the time-travel style conundrum is : If someone is arrested before he commits a murder, can the person be accused of the murder, which, because they have been arrested already can never take place? The prisons are likely to fill up quickly with this style of justice and the system, which is trialling well in Washington is beginning to receive opposition.
Anderton, played reasonably well by Cruise, is a big fan of the system, throwing himself into his work to get over the death of his son 6 years earlier, until his name comes up as a murderer (to be). The pace speeds up as he has 36 hours to solve the puzzle and save himself from his own system(metal spiders that scan eyes!!! urgh), dodging his own police force and saving they day (as he usually does, but this time without a pair of sunglasses)
When Anderton reaches the point where he is supposed to commit murder I truly believed the film was over and it was going to have a YOOHOO, as I call them (UHUE - uncommon in Hollywood unhappy ending) but we had only reached the paradox part of the film, or plot hole if that's what you want to call it, in a similar vein to Donnie Darko or the Oracle scene in the Matrix. Now the film turns into more of a conspiracy theory as Anderson tries to figure out who is setting him up & why by kidnapping one of the 3 precogs and unravelling another 'minority report' that had been ignored until then.
Max von Sydow gives a great performance,as usual & Spielberg makes another great adaptation of Dicks work. Its not overly sci-fi, like total recall or blade runner, so it should appeal to a wider audience. The underlying theme of the film is about controlling free will at the expense of security, relevant today with the introduction of eye scans at airports, identity theft & increased controls around the world in the face of terrorism. Not just a no-brainer action movie but easy enough to watch as one if you don't want to think about it too much also.
Director: Steven Spielberg (ET, Raiders fo the lost Ark, Jurassic park) Starring: Tom Cruise (mission impossible, top gun, war of the worlds) Co-Starring: Max Von Sydow ( Judge Dredd, Dune, The Exorcist)
Run time : 145 minutes (2hours 25 minutes) Rated PG13 Released 2002
Advantages: good spielberg/cruise action Disadvantages: in my view none but some people will not like it
to clear his name is to find out if he has a minorityreport which is when one of the three precogs disagrees with the others so the crime is not guaranteed to happen but the only way to find out is to break in to the pre crime headquarters and kidnap Agatha because she is the most psychic of them.
This film has a great futuristic view, the scene when he is jumping from car to car on the magnetic motorway is amazing and the way all the buildings and interiors have been made to look is very realistic to what they might look like in 50 years time.
This film was a massive hit at the cinema making over $230m worldwide and £20m in the uk alone so this film looks certain to been a massive hit on DVD. If you liked films like A.I. or Blade Runner you will love this, because in my view the writer Phillip K Dick is on of the best around ...
Advantages: Superb film with moral, religious and ethical issues. Disadvantages: No disadvantages whatsoever
As much as I hated watching films which are futuristic and so unreal, I quite liked this film. As I am a person who looks for perfection in sound qualities, image resolutions, etc, I think the MinorityReportDVD was far more better than the actual VCR.
You might think that DVDs are more expensive than VCRs, but surely the little increase won't make a difference for the likes of you. If that money could be spent on more pairs of trainners and more sweets, then surely the DVD is affordable. Afterall, the advantages you receive from a DVD is much more than from a VCR, making the product worth more than just the value for what you pay:
1) Excellent Image Resolution,
2) Dolby Digital sound effects,
2) Customisable sound quality,
4) Ideal for surround systems, and
5) Much more!!!
DVDs are now becoming more dominant and well ...
Advantages: Superbly written with tremondous depth. Disadvantages: Failure at the box office. Over complicated?
own metaphorically). It is for this inquisitive and honest portrayal of what the future is really going to be like, that the film just clinches 5 stars from me.
From head to toe, this film feels like a big deal. Huge action scenes, doubled up with a great script and plot, mean that watching this is very exhilarating, and feels like a typical summer blockbuster. However, it is also when you switch the TV off, and start thinking about what you have just seen that you realise the film is so much more deeper than what it appears to be on the surface, and that the various levels of depth and meaning in the film can be individually related to be anyone. The film comes together beautifully, and is a perfect example of what can happen when film makers decide to not walk the straight and narrow.

The science-fiction thriller MINORITY REPORT, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise, is based on a short story by renowned writer Philip K. Dick. In the year 2054, in Washington, D.C., murder has been eliminated thanks to Precrime, a program that uses the visions of three psychics, called Precogs (an abbreviation for precognitive thinkers), to arrest and imprison would-be murderers before they have a chance to kill. Tom Cruise plays John Anderton, a Precrime enforcer who believes in the system for his own personal reasons years back his young son was abducted, and he has dealt with the loss by becoming a high-strung Precrime officer. The director of Precrime (Max von Sydow) is eager to take the program national, and feels threatened by an ambitious federal agent (Colin Farrell) who is bent on finding a flaw in the system. When Anderton finds himself accused of the future murder of a man he's never met, his faith in Precrime is instantly shaken. He goes on the run, and is trailed by the relentless Precrime police. In the tradition of BLADE RUNNER (also based on a Dick story), MINORITY REPORT is a dark, brooding vision of the future. Spielberg expertly mixes thrilling chase and suspense sequences (the best of which involves Anderton being pursued by eye-scanning mechanical spiders) and stunning special effects with a challenging look at society's willingness to sacrifice privacy and the notion of free will for convenience and security. MINORITY REPORT is a thought-provoking and exciting film that ranks with Spielberg's best.
