of the Mediterranean Sea, the Silk Road is the most prominent and distinguished trade route in the world, having linked the present-day countries of China, India, Iran, Iraq, and Syria for close to 1000 years. Originally established by the Chinese government as a means of trading goods with the Roman Empire, the Silk Road evolved over the centuries to become a symbol of cultural exchange that married the disparate art, music, and religious traditions of the many diverse communities along its path. Sonic Implants Silk Road CD captures authentic melodic and percussion instruments native to the Middle Eastern leg of this illustrious trade route, performed by Middle Eastern musicians and utilizing methods and techniques innate to centuries of musical tradition. Featuring a vast array of multi-sampled stringed, wind, and percussion instruments, the CD also includes Percussion Loops and Melodic Improvisations, effective for creating your own music, and for gaining a better understanding of the musical sensibilities inherent to the region. Advantages: Detailed, informative, essential reading Disadvantages: Long, heavy, Fisk can go on a bit at times
As a news correspondent covering the MiddleEast for the past thirty years and a long-time resident of Beirut, Robert Fisk is perhaps uniquely acquainted (at least amongst Western correspondents) with the region, its history and its issues. As someone who is known for calling a spade a spade, he has often aroused strong sentiments (which he takes pains to stress repeatedly throughout his book), particularly amongst those who strongly support Israeli. Scathing, unsparing in its criticism of folly (his own included), at times humorous and often heartbreaking, this book is a comprehensive and well-written guide to the recent history of the MiddleEast.
Fisk's subject matter covers the first and second Afghan wars, the two Iraq wars, the Algerian civil war, the Iran-Iraq conflict, the Armenian genocide, and of course, the Palestinian ...
I'm currently on another visit to my boyfriends home in sunny Eastbourne, and as has become my custom, I've been dragging him out of bed every day to go and show me the local sights, aided by a little yellow book that gains us free entry to a variety of attractions - his mum works in a local attraction herself and gets us these trade passes .
On this occasion , we decided to go visit Middle Farm, nestled at the foot of Firle Beacon, just outside Lewes . As with many attractions in this area of East Sussex, the drive, for a city girl like me is an attraction in itself - driving past stunning sea views part of the way, and rolling Sussex Downland interrupted by small villages full of character filled old buildings and the occasional country pub. For someone whose normal travel in my home city of Nottingham generally involves taking a bus ...
Advantages: Funny, well-written Disadvantages: Some apparently find it anti-Islam and racist
found insulting to Islam - I can't say that I found it so, but then I am not religious - I suppose the only way to deal with this is to avoid watching if you think you will be upset. There is a great deal of swearing, which may also offend some, as well as the odd bit of wife beating - again, if you are concerned about any of this, then stay well clear.
I really enjoyed this film. I thought the multicultural issues were dealt with really well; I certainly felt very deeply for the characters involved and really wanted things to work out for them. Obviously if any of the content I have mentioned is likely to offend, then you should probably stay away from this film, but otherwise, I think most people will find something to enjoy in it. Highly recommended.
