Let's get this straight right from the off - me and Mrs dave27 despise Hugh Grant and all his works and have no time whatsoever for him. We approached Mickey Blue Eyes with a fair amount of trepidation therefore and weren't expecting to be impressed.
We couldn't believe it when we actually found ourselves laughing out loud at this pretty enjoyable film. Grant comes over as standard Hugh Grant, stereotypically English, but is really quite amusing (ooh, that's a bit strong!) in this film in the role of an English auctioneer in new York City who falls in love with a mobster's daughter.
There are some great support performances too from James Caan as yer typical gangster and Edward Fox as Grant's boss, with Jeanne Tripplehorne providing the romantic interest.
It's actually very reminiscent of Analyze This starring Bob De Niro and Billy Crystal in that a helpless sap gets involved in mob violence and I kept finding myself comparing the two films. I loved Analyze This but Mickey Blue Eyes runs it pretty darn close.
The best part is undoubtedly the little set piece where Grant has to try and come across as a stereotyped mobster and Caan gives him the lowdown on the way to the meet of how to talk Little Italian. Grant is really rather good, although I still find myself loathing him with a quite inexplicable unreasonableness.
Caan has most of the good bits in their double plays and Fox is the undoubted highlight of the piece with his bumbling, drunken English gentleman, particularly when he is taking the piss out of one of the gangsters at Grant's wedding.
Essentially, the story runs along the lines of Grant proposes to Tripplehorn, she runs off, he meets Caan and the two are reconciled. The family try to do him some good, to Grant's distinct lack of amusement. There is an accidenbt and the big mobster's son gets shot. They find out that Grant's involved and force Caan to try and kill him. Caan and Grant are tracked down by the FBI who persuade them to catch the real Mr Big, big shoot out at wedding party and Tripplehorn is shot.
I can honestly recommend this although I find myself hating the thought and I would advise you to check out Analyze This in preference, but they are both very good indeed.
