(star ofFour Weddings and a FuneralandNine Months), so whether or not you like the movie will depend heavily on your affection for Grant. He plays an art auctioneer who falls in love with schoolteacher Jeanne Tripplehorn (Basic Instinct,Very Bad Things), who just happens to be the daughter of mobster James Caan (The Godfather,Misery). To protect Grant, Tripplehorn tries to fend off his proposal of marriage, but some miscommunications lead to Grant being embraced by the "family." After the mob decides to launder money through Grant's auction house, an accidental killing results in Grant pretending to be Mickey Blue Eyes out of Kansas City (the sight and sound of Grant trying to say "fuggedaboudit" was undoubtedly what sold the movie in the first place). The plot isn't as well executed as it could be but the leads are all well cast and there are some excellent supporting performances, particularly Burt Young (Rocky) as a myopic mob boss and Scott Thompson (from the comedy troupeThe Kids in the Hall) as a sprightly FBI agent. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com--This text refers to the VHS edition of this video

This is quite an enjoyable and light-hearted comic take on the Hollywood gangster movie that most people will be familiar with. From 'The Godfather' and 'Scarface', to 'Carlito's Way', 'Goodfellas' and 'Casino', the gangster has become a byword for blood, gore, drugs and guns. And plenty of swearing, with Italians in suits shooting people and saying 'forget about it' a lot. And this film manages quite successfully to retain the stock images of your average gangster film, adding a terribly polite Englishman and some comedy to the mix for good measure.
Hugh Grant manages, finally, to make a break from the stuttering, stumbling floppy-haired fop role that he has made his own over the years (and even cracks a joke about his hair) - he plays Michael Felgate, an auctioneer for Cromwell's in New York, who is besotted with Gina Vitale (Jeanne Tripplehorn), an attractive schoolteacher of Italian descent.
He is so taken with this young lady that he proposes marriage, even though he has never met her parents - and that is where the trouble starts. It transpires that Frank Vitale (played superbly by James Caan, a role he clearly relished!) is in fact a big name in the local mob, and Gina's 'family' is linked to all the big New York mafia families.
Gina doesn't want to go through with the wedding, even though Michael tries to convince her that he absolutely will not get drawn into the world of the mobsters - he has to go and meet her father on his own before she will even tell him why she doesn't want to get married, and it is then that he meets 'Uncle' Vito, who is actually one of the most feared killers in the area.
Well, they do manage to sort out their differences, but it soon becomes clear that kindly old Uncle Vito is still a dangerous man, and the auction house soon becomes a focal point of the FBI's interest, as various paintings by Vito's dangerously unstable son are being sold to launder mob money.
And that's the basic plot - unwitting outsider is set to marry into the mob, his wife-to-be knows what will happen and his future father-in-law genuinely likes the new addition to the family, but old habits die hard and he gets carried further and further into the inner circle of the life in 'the family'. Add an accidental murder and a serious falling out between Michael and Gina to this, and you have the ingredients of a decent movie.
There are some very funny moments - the fortune cookie scene in the Chinese restaurant, a wicked take on the gangster movie standard of burying bodies by the Hudson River in the dead of night, the old lady with a hearing aid and money to burn at the auction house, and of course the car journey when Frank Vitale tries to teach Michael (now christened Kansas City Little Big Mickey Blue Eyes) how to talk like a gangster. James Fox also plays the role of the slightly bemused senior partner at Cromwell's to a tee, bringing a touch of cinematic class to proceedings.
The ending is quite well done, but the you'll probably see the big twist coming a little way off. That aside, this is actually a pretty good effort - nothing outstanding, and it didn't win any Oscars, but it's an enjoyable way to spend a Sunday afternoon. I even found myself quite liking Hugh Grant, which is definitely a first!
...for him. We approached Mickey Blue Eyes with a fair amount of trepidation therefore and weren't expecting to be impressed.
We couldn't believe it when we actually found ourselves laughing out loud at this pretty enjoyable film. Grant comes over as standard Hugh Grant, stereotypically English, but is really quite amusing (ooh, that's a bit strong!) in this film in the role of an English auctioneer in new York City who falls in love with a mobster's ... ...I loved Analyze This but Mickey Blue Eyes runs it pretty darn close.
The best part is undoubtedly the little set piece where Grant has to try and come across as a stereotyped mobster and Caan gives him the lowdown on the way to the meet of how to talk Little Italian. Grant is really rather good, although I still find myself loathing him with a quite inexplicable unreasonableness.
Caan has most of the good bits in their double plays and Fox is the ...

Advantages: Very funny, good acting, twisting plot, unexpected ending Disadvantages: Soundtrack
Normally I don't like romantic comedies in the least little bit. The storylines are predictable and the 'comedy' just doesn't exist. They might have happy endings and be an easy enough film to watch but they are just too boring to be a decent movie.
However, I think that this film is really truly amusing. The storyline has various twists in it, and is continually entertaining and intriguing throughout. The jokes made within the film are appropriate ... ...material, it is still enough to make you feel happy and in a light mood throughout the film, and may even cause the occasional chuckle in some places.
The story is both really funny and interesting. It is based on the story of one man's love for another woman and how he convinces everyone that he would make a good husband for her, even through her gangster relations. It also involves the problems he creates for himself when he begins to enter the ...

Advantages: A one-joke concept that actaully succeeds due to the ridiculousness of the scenario, its comic potential, and the quality of the performances Disadvantages: Could be just too silly for some, and it's nothing new from Grant
...before - crops up in Mickey Blue Eyes, a mafioso comedy (yes, another one....alright?)
Previous attempts by Grant to *do* American movies have produced mixed results. This latest venture wisely allows him to do what he does best, or can possibly only do. He's done it time and again, to the point where any form of criticism (either positive or negative) is rendered meaningless. Hugh Grant is nearly always the same Hugh Grant, regardless of the film ... ...the bumbling romantic stereotype.
Mickey Blue Eyes is essentially played as a farce, but thankfully this is no Nine Months. It's premise is simply this : Hugh Grant has to pretend to be a member of the Mob. The whys and wherefores of the situation are trimmings that flesh out what is basically a one-joke concept. Does the prospect strike you as potentially hilarious? Whether it does or not will determine how much you enjoy and can stomach this unsophisticated ...

Mickey Blue Eyes is an American Hollywood film, starring the world famous Hugh Grant. Hugh Grant stars as an extremely good and funny auction dealer, who is madly in love with his girlfriend. So, one night he decides to propose to her in a Chinese restaurant (by means extremely funny), however the answer he gets is not at all what he wanted, in fact far from it. Later, he finds out why: her family is part of the Mafia. They decide to carry on with ...

Advantages: Funny scenes, some good performances Disadvantages: Poor opening
...as you may have guessed Mickey Blue Eyes is a film about the mafia, the New York Mafia to be precise. It stars, Hugh Grant as Michael, or “Little Big Kansas Mickey Blue”, James Caan as his potential father in law (Frank) and James Fox as the typical old English twit auction house owner and is a send up of the mafia and a few mafia films. (Do not worry, it has nothing of the Naked Gun send up to it, much to my relief.)
Now, I am not a ... ...that floppy manner. In Mickey Blue Eyes, nothing has changed in the type casting, but again the character as in Four Weddings works. This is in no small part to an excellent on screen chemistry with James Caan.
The basis of the plot is that Michael is seeking to marry Frank’s daughter, Gina (played by Jeanne Triplehorn), Michael knows nothing of Gina’s family’s Mafia connections and so when he proposes is shocked at her response.

DVD Description
Fish-out-of-water comedy tailor-made to the relaxed British mannerisms of star Grant. He stars as Michael Felgate, a dapper art auctioneer, whose romance with a school teacher entangles him in the workings of her mob family. While her father (Caan) accepts Michael wholeheartedly, a misunderstanding results in Michael having to pose as a mafioso himself- resulting in culture-clash laughs...
