Today I will review Michael Jackson's "Moonwalker" - a movie that means a lot to me and that has been with me for my entire life! Now I finally got it on DVD and can tell you what this beautiful, crazy movie is like!
A movie unlike any other
"Moonwalker" and me By now, I have known this movie for at least fifteen years! When I was a little child, Michael Jackson was the top of the charts and at the height of his career. My brother (who is four years older) and me were gripped by the Jackson madness! When my parents taped this movie from telefon so we could watch it over and over again, my brother did nothing else but dance and sing along with the movie for weeks! While my brother grew out of his Michael jackson love, I feel like this awesome singer has been with me through my whole life.
Shopper's appeal For quite a long time, "Moonwalker" was not available on DVD and it seemed like I had to live with the fact that my old video would decay at some point. But Michael Jackson's early death has had two positive consequences for me - I finally turned the radio on with the knowledge that nice music would be on and suddenly, Moonwalker was available on DVD in Germany! When I recieved a voucher for Amazon from a survey website, I knew what to get! The DVD was exceptionally cheap at €9.95, which equals about 8 pounds.
The Movie
Actors Of course, there's Michael Jackson! But we also get some other interesting actors. There's Joe Pesci playing the villain, and Sean Lennon (the son of John Lennon), Kelly Parker and Brandon Adams play the three children whom Michael rescues.
First part of the movie "Moonwalker" ist not your average music movie. This film is more of a collection of short segments crafted together! First, you see a song from a live concert ("Man in the mirror") with pictures of Ghandi, John Lennon and children in Africa mended in. After that, we see a table covered in precious items connected to Michael Jackon's carrer, music videos and stage outfits. There are also photographs of the Jackson Five. It goes on with the works of this sweet band! We see a long clip with bits of Jackson Five songs, as well as newspaper articles and clips from Michael's solo
career. This beautiful collage fades into Michael's later career, including scenes from the videos of "Why", "Dirty Diana" and "The Way You Make Me Feel".
After that, a new part of the movie comes up. We see a parking deck and men who jump into the camera's view. The viewer expects to see the music video of "Bad". It's silent and we see a person who makes us think it's Michael Jackson, as he is filmed from his buckle boots up. But then you start to wonder why Michael has such short legs... lo and behold! You will then notice that it is a group of kids lead by a cute buy dressed up just like Michael Jackson in "Bad". This is the kid's version of "Bad", called "Badder". This gang of kids that gives an amazing dance performance is facing three teenage hiphop guys who try to intimidate them. When the kids show off their dancing and sing, the older guys leave them alone.
When the teenagers leave, Mini-Michael leaves the set and goes down a set of stairs with what seems to be his manager. You start to notice that the parking deck seems to be part of a giant studio complex. The young Michael and his people leave the place and exit the set through a foggy entrance - and out comes the real, grown-up Michael Jackson! Following this sequence is a scene I have always liked a lot. Michael is in a giant, park-like film studio through which tourists take tours. One group spots Michael and chaos arises! Now Michael has to run away from the screaming crowd that will hunt him for photosgraphs and signatures! The weird thing is that almost all these people have giant play dough heads. My boyfriend mentioned it reminded him of "Wallace&Grommit". In the end, Michael manages to flee from the set on a motorbike. His escape on it is the music video of "Speed Femon". The confusing music video of "Leave me alone" is also being shown. In that video Michael is tied and chained into a little theme park. Rollercoasters and amusements are built around him. Through the video we sometimes say newspapers with silly headlines that have been written about him.
The second half of the movie - the main film Now, the realfilm begins, which is the second half of the DVD! It begins immedaitely after ,,Leave me alone". We see a night time sky full of stars. The camera floats down to a rooftop above a grey city. There are three children who are secretly making their way across the roof. As they look down from the roof, they spy on Michael Jackson, who leaves a house across the street in a fine suit, looking up at the sky and smiling. Suddenly, mashine gun fire rains down on the house! Katie, he girls of the little gang of kids, has a flash back at that moment. She remembers how she and the two boys were playing with Michael one day. When their dog 'Skipper' runs away, Michael and Katie go into the nearby woods and accidentaly discover the secret hideout of drug seller Dileo! They hear him talking about his plans of making all the children in the world become drug addicts. Michael is shocked - he and Katie hear all the gruesome details from far away. Unfortunately, Dileo loves to sorround himself with big, fury spiders and when one appears next to little Katie, she screams. She and Michael manage to run away - but now Michael is being followed by Dileo who wants no witnesses! This sequence explained why Michael is being attacked in front of his house and is being chases through town! When Michael gets caught up in a dead end street we get to know why Katie says Michael needs a shooting star. When Michael sees a shooting star, he is able to transform - may it be a car or another impressive thing! He runs Dileo and his troops over after he turns into a car and escapes! The children are to wait at a place called "Club 30's". This is a run down, dusty and spider-webbed old club. The kids are confused, think they are in the wrong place and leave it. They hide next to the place and then see Michael transforming back into a human and entering the club. Suddenly, the club comes back to live and we see the "Smooth Criminal" video. This is an extended version mended into the movie which you won't see on TV! In my opinion, this is the best dancing video ever made! The scene is absolutely impressive! Sadly, Dileo has managed to follow Michael and still wants to finish him off. When he doesn't succees, he tries to get Michael in another way - he kidnaps Katie! Of course Michael wants to save her and finds Dileo's hideout. There an impressive showdown happens and Michael Jackson has "Transformers"-like surprise for the viewers! At the end of the movie, there is another concert extract of Michael singen "Come together", which gives the movie a happy, up lifting end!
Personal impression This movie has been with me for my whole live and has left an impression on me. When I saw it has a grown up, I had to smile because I realized I had never fully understood it. I never noticed that Dileo was planning to make children become drug addicts! And I was never bothered by how confusingly the first half of the movie is put together. Upon watching the movie now, I find possibly edges for criticism. Nevertheless, it is hard to criticise a movie that is so unique in it's structure and presentation. If you are already a grown up when seeing this movie for the first time and are not even a Jackson-fan, you may find the first forty minutes very confusing. You see pasted together music videos for 25 minutes with a lot of added glitter effects. The chase through the film studio, the highway racing and the strange video of "Leave me alone" - it may seems weird to you. But if you are ready to take this colourful journey through Michael's life, you will enjoy it! The main movie may seem like Michael Jackson walked up to a director with a list titled "Things I've always wanted to do". And will this list has been worked and fulfileld beautiful and in a fun way, gaps and jumps in the structure may appear odd to some viewers. And, of course, you will be asking yourself questions concerning logic and sense. Why does Dileo take such big measures to kill Michael? Why is Dileo, as a drug dealer, wealthy enough to maintain a giant laser gun which would need the power of all atomic power plant to fire? Why does he have a whole armee? Why does Michael care so deeply for these kids and go out and play with them when they obviously know nothing about what he does? Why do they spy on him at the beginning? Katie obviously knows he needs shooting stars, but when they see Michael transform they are deeply shocked! Those questions might be fun to ask, but they don't make the film less beautiful or less entertaining. The movie was released twenty years ago and I dare say that the audience back then was less likely to ask these kinds of questions. I feel like people were more willing to accept outrageous and sometimes ilogical stuff. Maybe the wish to get away from reality was bigger back then. This wish is the essence of "Moonwalker" and maybe Michael Jackson's motivation behind it.
The DVD Packaging I am reviewing the German version of this DVD, but as far as I could find out, the English DVD that is sold on Amazon is exactly the same, only containing no other languages. The DVd case is black and sadly there is no booklet inside. Sadly, the cover is not the original cover but a new one. There is a comic-like black and white picture of Michael on a blue and black, star-covered background. Above that, it says "Michael Jackson - Moonwalker" in white capital letters. The German cover also says "A movie... unlike any other." around Michael's legs. The cover is not as beautiful as the old one but it still suits the movie. On the back of the case there are some pictures from the movie (one from a scene of "Smooth Criminal", a close up of Michael's face, a photo from "Bad" and a photo taken from "Leave me alone"). There is also a text describing the movie as a musical adventure that will give you an entertaining evening. It is said to be a treasure for collectors. The guest appearances of Joe Pesci, Mick Jagger, Sean Lennon, Elizabeth Taylor and other celebrities are also praised. The music videos that appear are listed in a blue square. In another square you get information on the DVD regarding languages etc.. Below that the producers and the directors are listed as usual. There is also a white barcode in the right corner.
Special Features Sadly, there is only one special feature - the US trailer of "Moonwalker". But as the credits roll after the movie, you get some behind-the-scenes bits!

DVD menu The menu is pretty and changes a little with pictures of Michael Jackson framing it. "Man in the mirror" is playing in the background and you hear people cheering. You can choose between starting the film, going to the scene selection, watching the trailer or selecting languages and subtitles. The menu is appealing, easy to use and pretty without being annoying as some menus tend to be.
Conclusion This movie is a beautiful way to remember Michael Jackson who sadly passed away. This movie was beautiful when he lived and will always stay that way. I take one star off because I don't think the movie makers have used the full potential this movie had, and I am also disappointed by the special features on the DVD. As far as I know, there is some behind the scenes material.
The movie is great fun and will move you. It is funny, beautiful, dramatic, sweet, artistic and full of action. Altogether I think the movie is Michael Jackson's successfull journey into the world of making movies!
Simply.. a movie unlike any other! Four stars for MOONWALKER.
