recreation of Dickensian London and David Jason--a name guaranteed to attract viewers regardless of the programme--in the title role it certainly had all the hallmarks of blockbusting television drama. Jason is certainly a fine Micawber, wringing every ounce of pathos and relentless optimism from one of Dickens' most well loved characters. And he is ably abetted by Annabelle Apsion as his put-upon wife who stands by him through thick and thin and who "never will desert him". The trouble is that if you're going to lift a familiar fictional character out of his original context and give him a whole new life and set of adventures, they really have to match or improve on the original. And Micawber has already been through so much during the course ofDavid Copperfieldthat stretching him across four episodes and a plot which can only really offer a series of variations on the original theme doesn't give much room for development or dramatic impact. In the writer's corner, Jason's long-term collaborator John Sullivan (creator ofOnly Fools and Horses) makes a valiant attempt to generate some authentic Dickensian atmosphere. Touches of authentic Victoriana abound in the backstage theatre scenes, a dancing bear, the pawn shop and the highly imaginative flashbacks to the source of Micawber's straightened state. The script tends to combine gritty costume drama with modern comedy in an occasionally uneasy mixture; sometimes we see the ghosts of Del Boy or Pa Larkin rather than Dickens' hapless, pathetic but great-hearted victim of circumstance. But fans of Jason won't complain and there's enough soul in the story to make it compelling. --Piers Ford

Advantages: Best comedy ever!!!! Disadvantages: Not many extras, but hey, what more could you possibly want
THE best comedy series ever created is my honest opinion. There are very few actual laugh out loud comedy programmes however all seven series of this fabulous box set are incredibly funny. The family consists of Delboy (the ultimate cockney geezer), his brother Rodney (the ultimate dipstick), and either grandad in earlier series or uncle Albert in later series, and of course their friends including Trigger and Boycie. As far as british comedy goes, I would go as far as saying this is unbeatable, from the moment you begin watching you will fall in love with the loveable rogues and follow their journey through the years as they try absolutely every scam in the book to make a fast buck. You could also watch these episodes over and over again which suggests how good this is. The box set is a must have for any fan out there. ...

The DVD I own of this is the 2 disc edition although there are many other releases of this series available. It is suitable for all ages but is rated PG, it is filmed in full screen and only has mono sound but this does not distract from the brilliance of the show. There are some extras on the disc; they are as follows - an Interview with John Cleese, Exclusive Interview with Prunella Scales, Commentary by Producer John Howard Davies and the usual scene selection. I paid £10 ...
