First review on here for a long time, so be gentle with me!!! I have been doing a 'Classical Hollywood Cinema' module as part of my degree so I thought it might be an idea to have a go at a film review... Here goes!
Plot For those of you familiar with the original TV series, this is a cop drama following two vice squad detectives, Crockett (Colin Farrell) and Tubbs (Jamie Foxx). The basic plot revolves around the pair infiltrating a gang of drug dealers (the FBI were supposed to be doing this but their agents are exposed as working for the FBI and therefore Miami police get involved as they are unknown to the dealers). There is also a subplot of Tubbs' girlfriend being kidnapped by white supremacists. To be honest, there isn't too much of a plot and what there is seems to be pieced together through by some very tenuous links. The kidnap plot felt more like an afterthought to pad the film out!
Acting Jamie Foxx is excellent in this film in my opinion. He is able to carry off the action scenes to a tee. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of Colin Farrell! His accent seems to wander between Texan and Irish (I believe he took voice coaching for the role) and maybe it was just me but I didn't really connect with his character at all.
Direction OK, this is where the film scores highly with me, the scenery shots used by Michael Mann are amazing, as is the camera action when you are following the car chases. The film looks great, very sleek and sophisticated.
What's wrong with it? In my opinion, the plot should have been developed more. I was expecting to see lots of scenes with the two detectives fighting crime together, but to be honest, they don't spend very long on screen with one another! Crockett seems to be off saving the world singlehandedly much of the time whilst Tubbs just seems to vanish from the action for long periods of time. Also, I felt (and I'm going to sound like a real prude now!) that any sex scene that goes on for longer than five minutes is a little unnecessary.... you can see too much of Jamie Foxx (and Colin Farrell for that matter) if you get my drift!
Personally, I wouldn't recommend this one. It's plot is not worth seeing through to the end and apart from the direction and scenery has not got very much going for it...
We got our copy on rental from Lovefilm, but I have seen this on offer at HMV and I know Amazon does copies quite cheaply - if you're still interested that is!
Thanks for reading, this was my first film review so any comments on how I can improve style are welcome!
Thanks,
Sarah xx

Advantages: Fantastic visuals; intense attention to detail; atmospheric; great direction; partnership between Farrell and Foxx captured well Disadvantages: Lack of character drama; overly heavy storyline; visuals superficially come out on top; drawn out in places; distanced from audience
