The novel 1st appeared in the magazine Illustrietes Blatt, Frankfurt. The book published by August Scherl Verley G.M.b.H my copy of the film classic by Fritz Lang Metropolis came free with the Times in DVD video format, I had some problems choosing the category from ciao's selection, any ideas on improvements to this please let me know. This German science fiction epic produced in 1927 has a running time of 118 minutes. The censors rate the film PG parental guidance for general viewing but some of the scenes might be unsuitable for young children. The film stands as a monument to Fritz Lang's artistic vision and film craftsmanship.
THE STORY
CAST
The Thin Man : Fritz Rasp 11811 : Erwin Biswanger Grot : the guardian of the Heart Machine. Joh Frederson : Alfred Abel. Maria : Brigette Helm. Rotwang : Rudolph Klien - Rogge.
Perfect in every detail. Intriguing, exciting and thrilling with lots of religious
undertones and tyranic leaders. No wonder Hitler liked this movie... It is the future (about 2000 in 1926 when the film is made a lifetime away), and humans are divided into two groups: the thinkers, who make plans (but don't know how anything works), and the workers, who achieve goals (but don't have the vision). A mammoth city is ruled by the industrialist Joh Fredersen (Alfred Abel). Those on the surface live what appears to be a utopian dream with wealthy thinker living in palatial apartments living in colossal glass and concrete spires. But underground it is different. Completely separate, neither group is complete, but together they make a whole. One man from the "thinkers" dares visit the underground where the workers toil, and is astonished by what he sees. Armies of slaves (workers) work gruelling shifts to maintain the standards of those above. These are led by Maria (Brigette Helm) who urges them not to rebel but to wait the arrival of the mediator. Joh Fredersen kidnaps Maria and orders the mad scientist Rotwang (Rudolph Klien - Rogge) to create a robot replica to take her place. Meanwhile Joh son Freder (Gustav Frohlich). His plan is doomed when the robot inspires the workers to revolt.
THE CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE
Screenplay Thea von Harbou. Set design Otto Hunte, Erich Kettelhut, Karl Volbrecht. Camera : Karl Freund, Gunther Rittau. Music : Gotfried Huppertz. Sculpter : Walter Schultze - Mittendorf.
All that survives of the original "Metropolis" are an incomplete original negative & copies of shortened & re - edited release prints. Over 1/4 of the film has been considered lost. My version (the present) which combines all of the surviving elements attempts to recreate the film as shown at its premiere. It also had added Intertitles to summarise the plot of the missing sections. Taking 16 months to film and with a cast of 37,383 and costing over $2 million at 1920's prices everything about this epic German science fiction film, which was inspired by the towering Manhattan skyline, is gigantic. Then you have the filming. Everything is perfect. The use of body language is tremendous, the light setting perfect, everything well timed and perfectly captured by the camera.
I don't think any movie after this one have gotten so much out of the available effects of the time as this one. Nowadays they have super computers generating special effects. Back in 1926 all effects had to be done by hand or in simple editing. And when you take a look at all the things that have been done in this movie, it's impossible not to get impressed. Huge buildings, explosions, flooding, picture phones (however did he come up with the very idea?), transformation sequences, robots and so on.
MY OPINION
My DVD comes with the Epigram The Mediator between head and hands must be the heart. This rather sums up the film philosophically. The all black and white picture quality is rather good and benefits from enhancement. The music adds a real drama to the whole show which is speechless and with a strong emphasis on mime. Everything in the movie looks very clean which adds to the surrealism of the movie. Given the time of production the cinematic experience is rather similar to Keaton & Chaplin. My favourite scene concerns the introduction of the robot, subsequent scenes concerning the robot add considerable fascination for me as an AI man.

Are there no extras? I am torn between thinking that you may have told us too much of the plot and wondering about things like "was this one of the 'silent' movies?" (you don't say) ~ I like your 'off-hand' reference to Hitler, by the way, although you could have elaborated a bit more! ♥♥ ! ~ ~ .................................................................................................... ~ ♥ ~ jes ~ ♥♥
Advantages: Seminal, thought-provoking and fantastic special effects for its time Disadvantages: But it's just so slow! Second half really loses its way.

Review of Metropolis (DVD)
Advantages: Lovely-looking mix of CGI and anime, fair soundtrack, imaginative and clever, lots of extras Disadvantages: Difficult to see who it's aimed at at times, unendearing leads, too many sub-plots to keep up with, fails to ignite much interest in the viewer
