Robert Townsend has managed to build an entire career on the basis of one funny movie (The ... more
Hollywood Shuffle)--even though he hasn't had one that was anywhere near as funny since. Case in point: This would-be comedy about an unwilling black superhero. Townsend plays a schoolteacher in a bad Washington, DC, neighbourhood that is controlled by a vicious drug gang (recognisable by their blonde-dyed hair). Then he is hit by a meteor and suddenly finds that he has super strength and can fly (and can read the minds of dogs). But Townsend's writing is surprisingly weak and, despite a cast that includes a mugging Bill Cosby, Eddie Griffin, Robert Guillaume and sadly miscast James Earl Jones, this movie is never able to get off the ground.--Marshall Fine

I'm not quite sure what Meteor Man is supposed to be. Is it a spoof on the likes of Superman or is it a serious attempt to create a black hero based on the likes of Superman?
The basic plot follows a hapless teacher who is naive to the point of no return. He works in one of the worst areas of the city - controlled by a drug pushing gang.

The basic plot follows a hapless teacher who is naive to the point of no return. He works in one of the worst areas of the city - controlled by a drug pushing gang.
One night whilst tring to protect a woman from being raped he is chased by the gang. Having managed to avoid them he somehow manages not to avoid a large meteorite which implants itself within him.
When he wakes up in hospital he slowly discovers he has super powers and sets about putting the world - or at least the neighbourhood to rights.
The cast - nearly all black - are all stereotypical of what you would expect a black ghetto to be like. There are lots of famous faces including James Earl Jones with ever increasingly weird hair styles and Bill Cosby as a down and out drunk.
The special effects aren't too bad, but they do look dated by todays standards. The film is undoubtedly played for laughs and is probably trying to portray some message about drugs and communities sticking together.
All in all not the sort of thing I would pay to watch (thank goodness I didn't!!). Put it on for the kids on a Sunday afternoon because anyone with more than an average IQ will loose interest very quickly!!
Advantages: Great fun packed entertainment for kids Disadvantages: It will take over your TV!
mischief and mayhem. he only speaks in rhyme!
- Zippity - there is not much to say about Zippity except that he is the space Post man!
