Message in a Bottle, 1999
History
Based on a novel by Nicolas Sparks who also wrote The Note Book and A Walk to Remember, I have seen The Note Book and loved it, I am yet to see A Walk to Remember but have heard great things about it! Searching for cheap copy on e-bay at the moment.
The Story
As the title suggests this film is about a message in a bottle! Divorced mum of one Theresa Green (Robin Wright Penn) comes across the bottle whilst jogging along the beach, she reads the message it contains, it is a love letter to a 'Dear Catherine, Love G'. touched by the warmth of the words she shares her find with her work colleges. Theresa just happens to work at a newspaper and her editor decides to print the letter without Theresa's knowledge. The response to this letter is astounding and it seems two other letters have also been found, Theresa is intrigued to track down and meet the author of this letter as she feels she has made a connection with him already just through his heart felt words. The author of the letter is in the shape of a widowed husband Garrett Blake (Kevin Costner), Theresa decides to use her journalist skills to unearth the truth behind the letters. But with all secrets and lies it has some unpleasant consequences.
My Thoughts
This is film is a romance with two love stories both surrounding the goof looking Kevin Costner character Garrett Blake. The story is a little week, pretty obvious as it says it all in the title really, but I was pleased that the ending was not as predictable as I thought it would be. The acting is good but not mine blowing by any strength of the imagination, I am surprised to see an established actor such as Kevin in a movie like this as is capable of much greater things, but perhaps he is just a romantic at heart. Robin Wright Penn's performance as Theresa Green is good, but I have to say I found her character rather annoying, as if you would fall in love with someone you have never met just by reading a love letter they had sent to someone lese! Yes not to you to someone else! It is basically a Sunday afternoon movie, to watch if you have nothing better to do! Which at the moment I don't!
Actors and Characters
Theresa Green played by Robin Wright Penn, Theresa is a divorced mum of one, who lives in Chicago and works for a newspaper. She has been hurt in the past and is looking for love again. When she finds a message in a bottle she is swept away by the words she reads and goes on a journey to find the author. Theresa has appeared in many films including 'The Princess Bride' and 'Forrest Gump'.
Garrett Blake played by Kevin Costner, Garrett Blake is a widowed husband still trying to come to terms with his wife's death two years on. He lives in a quite fishing town and has an obsession with sailing and boats. When Theresa arrives in his life he has to try and put the past behind him but it is not easy. Kevin is a great actor who has appeared in many great films such as 'The Body Guard', 'Robin Hood Prince of Thieves' and 'Dances with Wolves'. As I said previously this is not one of those great films and I am surprised he took the role!
This film has some great supporting actors in it, Paul Newman plays Garrett's interfering but charming father Dodge Blake, he is great in this role and is much but than Costner, he probably the best thing about this movie! Robbie Coltrane plays Theresa's boss Charlie Toschi, known in the UK for his appearances in TV series 'Cracker' I can forgive Robbie for taking a role to try and improve his career in America.
