Attracted by the trailers my better half and I went to see Message in a Bottle at the cinema. We were not to be disappointed by a truly outstanding film.
Kevin Costner, Robin Wright-Penn and Paul Newman are all fantastic in a film where a widower writes a letter to his wife, wraps it in a bottle and throws it out to see. Wright-Penn picks it up off a beach and begins a search for the author.
To the cynic it is quite predictable what happens, but the twists and turns of love never run smooth and there are enough interesting sidebars to keep everyone interested. It is a terk-jerker, filled with emotion and often tension amid characters, but I found it a nice change to watch a film which relied on a good plot and solid acting.
As a slight warning I did watch this film after a bad day at work, and it didn’t exactly lift my mood. Also a note for the mothers out there – my Mum watched this film and cried from start to finish.
