I'm slowly working my way through my film and DVD collection and noticed that a little while ago, my mom bought this movie after seeing the first one and loving it! So I decided to give this one a go and now I'm reviewing.....
MEN IN BLACK 2
***ACTORS AND ACTRESSES***
Tommy Lee Jones - Space Cowboys, Double Jeopardy, Rules of Engagement
Will Smith - I Robot, Bad Boys, Wild Wild West
Rip Torn - Maniac Magee, Eulogy, Love Object
Lara Flynn Boyle - Chain of Fools, Red Meat, Susan's Plan
Johnny Knoxville - Jackass Volume 2, The Ringer, A Dirty Shame
Rosario Dawson - This Revolution, Alexander, The Rundown
***CHARACTERS***
Kevin Brown/ Agent Kay Played by actor Tommy Lee Jones. As in the last movie, Kay had is memory wiped of all things to do with Men In Black and was given a whole new identity. As it stands, Kay is a kick ass guy and a bit of legend at MIB and has decades worth of experience under his belt. But sometimes, all he wants is to lead a normal life.
Agent Jay Played by actor Will Smith. Agent Jay is the cool, slick, no-crap, funny one of the bunch. After Kay left in the last film, Jay kinda took over but buy all standards is considered a Rookie when comapred to Kay. His casual laid back attitude has gotten him into trouble more than once and has made him more than one enemy.
Zed Played by actor Rip
Torn. Zed would be the brains of the outfit and the head of MIB. He's an optimistic kinda guy (not) and gives all the orders out. But still, being an agent of MIB, he could still kick your butt!
Serleena Played by actress Lara Flynn Boyle. Serleena is the baddy in this film. An alien who takes the form of a gorgeous supermodel is looking for something. She'll doing anything to get what she wants and has a personal score to settle with a certain agent on earth. Whilst supposed to be bad and evil, she comes across as quite tolerant at times!
Scrad/Charlie Played by actor Johnny Knoxville. Scrad/Charlie are also aliens but with a twist. One of them looks like a normal human whilst the other is basically a head that pops out of a rucksack which the other wears constantly. You can't separate these two, even if they wanted to. They are another of the bad guys but both are a bit dim and afraid of what Serleena is going to do to them, should they not follow orders.
Laura Vasquez Played by actress Rosario Dawson. Laura is our damsel in distress and a bit unusual. She has always thought she had some strange abilities, but has never been able to explain them, except for the fact that she is a Libra. This is perhaps the most normal character in the movie and provides a little romance for Jay.
***PLOT***
So the movie begins with what looks like a huge alien spaceship blowing lots of planets into little tiny pieces. Nice little thing isn't it? I think it's looking for something. After 25 years of doing this, the little spaceship lands on earth (I sound like I'm five years old describing this.....<sigh>...) and is actually flipping tiny. Out pops a slimy looking alien who spots a Victoria Secret model in a magazine. Said alien, then shapeshifts into that model in order to look like humans and goes on her merry way.
After this model commits a series of murders, including the one she committed in the very same park that she landed in, it appears that she is looking for something and will do anything to get it.
At the moment there is only one person who has escaped unscathed and that is a pizza parlour worker who understandably is a little shocked when this model/alien kills her boss!
In comes Jay, who from the last movie is still as cocky as ever, seems to be running the show and starts to investigate the murder in the park. When he gets there, he finds the little spaceship and calls it in to his boss Zed, who immediately recognises it. It belongs to Seerlena, an alien who 25 years ago tried to steal a very valuable artefact that belonged to another race and is apparently still looking for it. Next he comes across the girl at the pizza parlour who saw her boss getting killed by the same alien and she tells Jay the same thing, the alien was looking for the artefact.
So now it's up to Jay to find this artefact before Seerlena does, but here comes a twist. The only agent who knows where it is has had his memory wiped of everything to do with MIB and is working in a post office. Jay has to give the once legendary agent Kay his memory back, so he can tell them what happened to this artefact and where it is. The only problem with this is that if they don't get this artefact off the planet within a certain amount of time..........KA-BOOM! The whole planet goes up in smoke. A pretty average day for the guys at MIB.
***MY PERSONAL OPINION***
In a word......disappointing. Although my mom loves this movie and thought that the first one rocked, I'm just not seeing the appeal. The whole thing to me was just to damned corny and not really that funny, like in the first movie. Will Smith seemed okay for his role, but looking at Tommy Lee Jones, it seemed that he could have spent his time doing something more worth while. The aliens......what where they thinking when they created them again. The first time it was funny, but now it's just boring. The story was just boring in general and it's not a story that will grip you or put you on the edge of your seat in a hurry. It looks like Disney had a crack at it!
True there are a few gags but the whole film looks low budget and a complete waste of time so don't watch it! From the critics point of view, this is quite disappointing but there are a few who like it. I don't know what else to say about this movie and why I thought it was so bad, because it was that mindnumbing. I have watched it a total of 2 times and that is it.
Here's what these guys think.
"The humor isn't as sharp, the effects not as innovative, nor the story as imaginative as in the original. But it could have been worse." Todd Anthony, SOUTH FLORIDA SUN-SENTINEL
"MIB II is a movie that makes it possible for the viewer to doze off for a few minutes or make several runs to the concession stand and/or restroom and not feel as if he or she has missed anything. That's because relatively nothing happens." Joe Baltake, SACRAMENTO BEE
"...the kind of movie you see because the theater has air conditioning." Sean Burns, PHILADELPHIA WEEKLY
