I personally watched this first when it was released (1997) and enjoyed it immensely. With a star studded cast (including both Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones) as a family film, it is very enjoyable. It bares no real hardship to the audience with it's quirky one liners (often donated by Smith) and it's easy to understand story line. It's not just your typical sci-fi film either as its comedy element is just as much emphasised as the kick-arse alien fighting part.
The story line is fairly simple to understand. The movie consists around the main characters agent K (Jones) and newly enrolled agent J (Smith), who are members of the top secret organisation that for 40 years have monitored alien activities on earth. The two agents soon find themselves in the middle of a plot by a bad man, intergalactic terrorist (D'Onofrio) who plans to assasinate two ambassadors from opposing galaxies. Armed with super high-tech gadgets and powerful guns, the two agents have to work together in an attempt to stop evil from destructing Earth.
The characters themselves are entertaining. The acting is of course good given the type of movie. Both leading actors are very accomplished and I'd be very disappointed if their imput was less than 100%. However, the film does lend itself to CGI for the aliens and thats where the focus of the movie is.
Graphics are good for the time and the soundtrack is also of equal praise - Title Song headed by Smith himself containing other non-human characters in the film. Although this shouldn't be one of the main reasons to watch it.
Advantages: humor the different styles of acting. Disadvantages: none
This film is a good all round family movie that allows the parents and children can laugth out loud together. Will Smith's comedy style works well with Tommy Lee Jones' straight cut acting.
without Tommy Lee's straight cut comments and dry humor this movie would not work, he is the star of MIB and although Will Smith steals the show with the funny lines, it would not work withou Jones.
I intally watched this when it was first released and still ...

...believe that these are the men that you will be watching throughout the film, but no sooner than thinking this you are suprised to see that one of them retires from the MIB in the way of wiping his memory. This means the one remaining partner needs a parter. Who else better than Will Smith, playing a part of a very fast FBI agent. He finaly becomes the unlikey pick of the very rare and unknown agency MIB.

Advantages: It's good, cheesy fun Disadvantages: It's not a must-own DVD, more of a rental
before. The talking dog, Frank, takes up a temporary role as Will Smiths partner, and the smoking worm guys get their own flat, in which they can entertain women by playing Twister (you probably need to watch the DVD to find that anything other than just plain disturbing).
The new baddie is interesting, if more than a little gross in her Medusa-like moments. Arriving on Earth she takes on a new form, and for a brief moment I finally saw on screen a woman who looks just like me when wearing Victoria's Secret underwear (that's disturbing with or without seeing the film!).
MIIB answers plenty of questions for me, particularly the one about "what the hell is up with that Jonny Knoxville guy?". He plays a dim witted alien who owes more than a little to Zaphod Beeblebrox. Interesting cameos from Michael Jackson, sadly held back by Menin ...
Advantages: excellent sci fi movie Disadvantages: not really suitable for young children

"...Dryly clever....Extraordinarily ambitious, with all-star design and special-effects talent and a genuinely artful visual style..." (New York Times, p.C9, 01/07/1997)
"...The out-there premise is irresistible.... Effects master Rick Baker whips up a swell array of oddball creatures great, small and just plain strange..." -- 4 out of 4 stars (USA Today, p.1D, 01/07/1997)
DVD Description
In the 1950s a super-secret government agency was formed to monitor and police the activities of extraterrestrial aliens on the planet Earth. Some 40 years later a founding father of the agency, Agent Kay (Tommy Lee Jones), finds himself with a new smart-mouthed partner fresh from the NYPD who is soon dubbed Agent Jay (Will Smith). Their first mission is to save the Earth from destruction by a giant insectlike alien (Vincent D'Onfrio) that, incidentally, drives an exterminator's truck. Armed with their matching Ray-Bans, skinny ties, and space-age weapons that Jay barely understands--he calls the Neuralyzer the "flashy thing"--the new duo begin another average day of fighting intergalactic terrorists. An amazingly hip and terribly clever movie that riffs on everything from E.T.--THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL to CASABLANCA, this Barry Sonnenfeld film is based on the equally savvy comic book by Lowell Cunningham.
