Created by Simon Nye, Director: Martin Dennis Producer: Beryl Vertue
The series was originally made for ITV, swapping to the BBC for series 3 and beyond.. In the five years of production, from 1992-1997, over 40 episodes were made, squeezing them into 6 series ( including some Christmas specials…)
** THE CHARACTERS**
Gary….(played by Martin Clunes), is a manager in a security firm, with his co-workers George, (played by Ian Lindsay) and Anthea, (played by Valerie Minifie). He owns the flat in the downstairs of a house, sharing with flatmate Dermot, (played by Harry Enfield) in series one, then Tony, (played by Neil Morrissey) from series two.. Who has a very unhealthy crush on Deborah, (played by Leslie Ash), who happens to own the flat above Garys…
Dorothy, (playedCaroline Quentin), is a nurse at the local hospital and has the misfortune of being Gary's long suffering girlfriend. So with Deborah and Dorothy being friends Tony has every opportunity to use his comical charms on the very tolerant Deborah…
** PLOT **
It is a simple idea of a group of people living their lives to the best of their abilities… coming across many hurdles as they go, especially when Gary and Tony come up with one of their hair brained schemes…
Series one sees Dermot and Gary, (although in a relationship with Dorothy), testing the water with the Deborah, the new owner of the flat upstairs… only for things to not go according to plan.
Series two sees Dermots position as flatmate being taken over by what can only be seen as Gary's soul mate… their likes and dislikes being uncannily identical… creating an immediate friendship as the new duo sit around drinking and setting the world to rights, in their own special way… Tony soon becomes obsessed with the girl upstairs, almost to the point of insanity..
From the start of series three, and onwards, it soon becomes clear that the show was not really intended for the younger members of the audience with a more 'smutty' approach… and some brilliantly innuendos.
Tony becomes more and more obsessed with Debbie and when she splits with her boyfriend he immediately sees this as his chance, relying on her vulnerability and sadness… Dorothy begins to wonder why she is with Gary? Always contemplating ending the relationship, although at one point marriage and babies looked like an option for the pair… would her feelings for the hapless Gary send her into a pit of depression or would she escape…? So as the series unravel, With Tony persistently chasing Debbie for a hot night of passion, Dorothy and Garys relationship becoming more and more unsettled, Anthea and George constantly moping around like lost sheep and an appendix operation which leaves Garys bedside manner in question,
With utter chaos following the hapless duo, including a break away for four which turns somewhat violent, a home made sauna with the girls next door and the end of one of Gary's prize possessions… the fun simply rolls along…
So, can Gary and Dorothys relationship stand up to the pressure?, including a spell of infidelity, and will Tony ever get his wicked way with Debbie?
** IN CONCLUSION **
This is a splendid show, bringing many laughs and some fantastic banter coming from the brilliant Clunes and Morrissey. The certificate 15 is probably wise as many of the innuendos may need explaining to some small minds…
It is the finest of humour although there is a possibility that it may offend some people, (like nuns, vicars and relatives of Mary Whitehouse), but the majority of the country will associate themselves with one or more of the characters portrayed…
The characters they play are somewhat typical of a lot of men of their age, being interested in only certain things, ie sex and booze…, (come on all you blokes out there, let's not lie about it, when you were at that age what else was on your mind?) The relationship problems between Gary and Dorothy are just typical of a normal relationship, the arguments, the pressure, the lack of certain things that disappear when a relationship blossoms, giving the program an air of realism.
In fact, you could see this as a sort of fly on the wall documentary following the struggling lives of four individuals as they go through life… (sort of)
** THE BOX SET **
The package cover states what to expect from the discs inside, showing the main characters, together with what their life's is about… beer, television, takeaways and more beer… It does exactly what it says on the tin…????
Inside the package, when unfolded, there are 6 disc, (obviously)… giving the viewer over 16 hours of comical entertainment and some fantastic story lines, in half hour slots for easier viewing happiness…
With some other extras on the disc, like outtakes which can be accessed by answering some simple questions, scene selection and an Interactive animation menu…
* Would I recommend this…?
Yes I would, although it may not be to everyones taste, (like marmite I suppose). What ever your taste you will find much of this series comical and well worth a viewing…
If you're interested then you can get a copy for less than £30.00 from www.amzon.co.uk (£50.00 normal price) or an even better price of £21.99 from www.zavvi.co.uk… bargain indeed
