Following on the lines of Scary Movie and Epic Movie thread, Meet the Spartans was made in 2008 as a spoof of 300. Not to be confused with other, funnier spoof movies, this one is a bit of a let down in my eyes.
***Film Info***
Starring Sean Maguire (yes the one from Eastenders that had a failed pop career) as Leonidas and Kevin Sorbo (Hercules/Andromeda) as Captain, Meet the Spartans does not just spoof 300. Carmen Electra also stars as Queen Margo (does she have to be in every spoof movie?). Ken Davitian (yes the hairy man from Borat) stars as Xerces, and looks repulsively funny in that role. Don't ask me why but every time I saw this guy, I started laughing. Maybe it was embarrassment for him, but I laughed at every scene he was in.
The film tries to follow the original script of 300 while making fun of the main characters. There are references to Brangelina, Shrek, Transformers, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan. Some of these references are funny but not all of them. The baby Shrek with the Exorcist-style green vomit was slightly chuckle-worthy but that was about it for me.
I have to admit that I did laugh at the scene where the Spartans are going to war, and off they dance, singing "I Will Survive", skipping and holding hands - that did make me chuckle.
Acting wise, I would have to say that Sorbo is the star of the movie. And really that is just because I like him in Hercules and Andromeda. The other performances are slightly wooden (especially Maguire). I have to admit to a little flutter when you first see Sorbo in those little leather pants, but that has to be the highlight of the movie!
Performances are pretty standard, Maguire was as exciting as watching paint dry and Electra is only in the movie for her assets (and I don't mean her acting talent). Davitian was funny and some of the supporting actors were slightly amusing.
***My Opinion***
To be honest, this is a film I could have happily not seen, but hubby really wanted to see it so I dutifully tagged along in the interests of a good review.
I thought it was just another tired old spoof movie that really did not need to be made. Some will find it funny but for me it just did not hit the mark.
I suppose, if you are a real fan of these movies, then it really will appeal to you, but for me it was just another movie.
I cannot in good conscience recommend this to anyone as I really found it to be a "flogging a dead horse" movie. I really cannot see why this movie was made, it just follows the same tired old method of all of the other films.
If you really want to see it, my advice is to wait till it comes on the television, or rent the DVD. Don't waste your money buying the DVD or going to the cinema, you would really just be throwing good money away.
Two stars from me and they are really for Sorbo and his acting!
Thanks for reading. Di xx
