Farewell To Arms:Based on a novel by Ernest Hemingway about his own real life experience, ... more
Farewell To Arms is a tale of the love between ambulance driver Lt. Henry (Gary Cooper) and Nurse Catherine Barkley (Helen Hayes) during World War I. The action takes place in Italy where the two fall in love and will stop at nothing to be together. The fateful ending is one of the most moving in cinematic history. Meet John Doe:Barbara Stanwyck plays fired journalist Ann Mitchell, who as a parting shot, prints a fake letter from unemployed 'John Doe' threatening suicide in protest of social ills. The ensuring huge swell of public interest and sales forces the paper to rehire Ann and hires John Willoughby (Gary Cooper) to impersonate Doe. Ann and her bosses cynically milk the story for all it's worth, until the made-up John Doe philosophy starts a whole political movement. At least everyone, even Ann, takes her creation seriously but newspaper publisher D.B. Norton has a secret plan.

In this Frank Capra film, Gary Cooper plays Long John Willoughby, an unemployed man who is duped into becoming an American symbol by D.B. Norton (Edward Arnold), an unscrupulous newspaper tycoon. When Ann Mitchell (Barbara Stanwyck) is fired by Norton, she sends a fake suicide note to the publisher signed by "John Doe." The letter is picked up by the public as a rallying point, since "Mr. Doe" claimed to be so distraught by the problems of society that he would end his life. But Norton uses the publicity as part of a secret plan. Capra's endearing classic also stars the great character actors Walter Brennan and James Gleason.
